Hi texasguitarslinger, nice to meet ya. I'm a huge SRV fan also. Glad to know you're here so if I need to know something about him. I've done alot of research on him too over the years. But it's always nice to meet others who have too. Someone always knows things the other don't and vice versa. Being from Texas, have you heard of a guy named Zack Rosicka. I'm not sure he's from Texas but he's down there in Texas now playing gigs. If you like SRV you should check him out. He's pretty good. You can listen to him on you tube. I'm assuming we'll be hearing him on the radio pretty soon. He's no SRV but I kinda like his style.

Ok so a 60's reissue has the right radius and the right string spacing if i digest all this right??? Sound right to you TGS?? Am i on the right track?? TGS whats's your opinion on the maple fret boards then?? Do you think it really does accentuate treble???

I took a look at the Classic Player's 60's specs and here are the main differences between it and the SRV.

-CP 60s has medium jumbo frets, SRV has jumbo. It won't make a huge difference if you're using .9s or .10s. But if you ever want the option of playing a heavier string gauge comfortably and you bend a lot, then the bigger the fret the better.

-The SRV still has a thicker neck, listed as "thick oval" (oval essentially means "C") while the CP 60s is a modern "C".

But the main thing is probably still going to be the 12" radius, and each of the necks have the same nut width. So if you want it for a Mexican Strat, it's probably as close as you're going to get to the SRV despite the differences. I'm not sure about the string spacing on either guitar (when I compared the CP 50s to my Highway One the Highway One was definitely wider). But with my new found knowledge of wide screw/narrow string, wide screw/wide string, I'm going to have to look into everything all over again since I assumed there were only two different string spacings period.

As far as the whole rosewood vs. maple argument, I'm sure there's probably some difference. But I think that other factors have much more to do with your tone than what wood your fretboard is made of. I think that pickups and amp choice, along with the way everything is EQ'ed, make a giant difference. Honestly, I can't hear the difference between maple and rosewood. My maple neck MIM is probably the darkest sounding of my Strats, and my rosewood Highway One is the brightest (I think it has to do with the kind of magnets used in the pickups). So for me, it's more of a cosmetic thing. Plus there's a slight difference in feel, with rosewood being more textured and maple being a little bit smoother. But there's not a big enough difference to make switching between the two bothersome.

That said, if the thickness of your pick and the way you hold it, and things like string gauge make a difference in tone (and they do), then perhaps the fretboard does too to a certain extent. And of course the one, main factor in all of this is the player. Your tone comes from your hands more than anything else. :)

Thank you once again TGS, As usual your valued information is incredibly informative and of great help. This string spacing is a grey area still i see. I'll continue on that road but i am getting alot further down it. Thanks again!..

Cool, I'll check him out. :) Always nice to meet another SRV fan. That's true about how what one person knows another may not. I've learned a lot of things from watching the forums and picking up bits of information.

Hi TGS, here's a good one by Zack Rosicka. He's covering "While We Cry" by Kenny Wayne. Amazing tone coming out of that strat and he's using a '75 Super Reverb. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ccXy756CJM

You might like it.

Just thought of something. My Highway One is a 2003 model, did they still have the wide screw, narrow string spacing before the upgrade in 2006?

Before they upgraded they were Wide/Wide

That would explain at least part of my confusion, thanks. :)
