Hey ive been playing guitar for about ten years (im seventeen so i guess the first few dont really count) and it sadly took me this long to realize that I LOVE the blues. Ive been through the thrash metal stage and playing constant metallica songs and then i turned into a green day freak but now i have finally matured musically.

My dad is in the music biz so ive had the chance to play some AMAZING strats owned by his friends. Every time i pick one up, i just no that the Stratocaster is the guitar for me. Sadly, money is kinda tight and it doesnt look like im gonna get one any time soon. Well im also a bit of an aspiring luthier and i had this old strat copy body that ive been sanding and moulding into perfection for a few years now.

So its time to get everything else that i need and think that the most vitail component is the neck. I want to get a true fender-made neck and was wondering where i could find one and what im looking at cost wise.

Any info is helpful, thanks

a seller named reliablefender sells genuine Fender parts, if you want to be sure it's real.

DL,
Unless you just really are itching to build a guitar, you can pick up a new Squire for less money than the components you're going to be buying and you can pick up a used MIM strat for about the same or maybe slightly less than what you'd spend on the components.

Something to think about.

As for the Fender neck, it may or may not work. You said you had a Strat copy body that you've been sanding on. Who knows what the neck pocket configuration on a random Strat copy is? It may be a perfect fit, it may not even be close. If you're really lucky, the neck pocket would be too tight and you could cut away wood to make it fit. If it's too big, well, then you're into completely filling in the neck pocket and carving a new one, or using shims to fill in the gaps. Both of those would be a LOT of work.

Unless you already have a bunch of stuff laying around, pickups, tuning machines, bridge/trem, pots, wires, knobs, etc. all cost money. Yes, you can make it exactly what you want, but if it's about saving money, you may want to look over your options to see what's out there and how much cash and time you want to sink in the project.

If you buy a used MIM and upgrade over time, you can offset some of the cost by selling the parts you removed on Ebay. You won't make it all back but $30 here, $20 there is better than nothing.

Just a thought for a Tuesday morning.

Jeff

"Aspiring luthier"? So make a neck, why not? We can talk you through it if you need help.

Cheers - C

Ceri,
That thread wehre you rebuilt Niki's burned out guitar and made a neck from a block of European Sycamore was classic. :-)

Wow, thank you, Jeff; that's very kind! :)

So, so busy at the moment, but we'll definitely do some more of those sometime soon. Lot's more possibilities to explore...

Cheers - C

If you're going to build a Partsocaster there are other options that may allow you to get pickier on what you want and what you don't want. Warmoth is one.

Stewart MacDonald is another.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
