The guard itself in held in place by those 11 screws around the outside edge. But you will need to remove from the guard:

* the pickups (held in place by two screws and springs)

* the pots (held in place by one nut on the top of the guard

and then re-attach those items on the new guard.

Dont forget that if your new pickguard does not have the shielding on it, you will need to try and peel it off the original one and re-use it or just use that shinny tape from Home depot. I forget what it is called but it will work. I did it the first way, it didn't come off in one piece but it still worked.

Get some towels so you do not scratch the guitar.

I made the mistake of not looking at the order of how the pick ups were attached.

So take off the strings. Take off the tone & volume caps. Take off the switch cap. Get two small cups to hold scews and stuff. Take out the 11 screws. Now your pick guard will lift up but not go very far because the wires are still attached to everything else.

Look at the order of how the pickups are attached. Going backwards, rubber booty, pickup, pickup cover, pickguard, screw.

Turn the pick guard on its side on top of the towel which is on top of the guitar to undo the screws holding the pickups to the pick guard.

Whats so bad about a not shielded pickguard? :s
Cause I just replaced my pickguard, and wondered what the aluminium foil thing was...

What is it for? and is it important to have on my new pickguard?

I would also take some measurements of how high your pickups stick up from the surface of the pickguard( at both ends of each) so you can set the pickup heights after you re install them
