Pardon the ignorance here, I'm just coming over from the acoustic world..

I purchased an American Special Mahogany HSS Strat. It shipped with the vibrato arm separately. I'm looking for some explanation of what this provides me, if I should install it and how..

That arm is for the actuation of your Tremolo bridge. it allows you to very the pitch of a note(s) by decreasing or increasing the tension on the strings. A lot of people that don’t use that option opt most of the time to cut a piece of wood to fit between the body and the bridge, thus eliminating the tremolo effect. Making it instead act like a hardtail bridge
