Alright, so I added a telecaster pickup between the neck and middle pickup on my strat, and added a toggle switch, I'm trying to successfully wire it up so the toggle switch can turn the tele pup on or off whenever I want while still utilizing the 5 way switch, no I don't want to add it to the 5 way, I want it so it's an option to add some warmth. Now I'd like it so I can hook it up to a tone pot, but it's not necessary, below is my current set up, the orange line is the question, it's coming from the output of the switch, the hot line leading in... If someone could help me out that'd be very much appreciated!

Hi JBGoode,

The easy way would be to solder the negative wire of the extra pickup to the back of the pot, wire the positive wire of the extra pickup to one terminal of the toggle switch, and wire the other terminal of the toggle switch to the center lug of the volume pot (volume output to jack). You could then switch the extra pickup in or out with the toggle, and the 5 way still functions the same as before.

If I am seeing your picture correctly, it looks like you would connect the orange line that you have drawn in from the toggle switch, to the center lug on the volume pot, instead of connecting it to the back of the pot as you have shown.

P.S.
Do you have the bottom tone pot wired as a blender pot, or ...? It has obviously been rewired from the stock tone control, but I can't tell how it's wired, other than it's not being used as a tone control. :?:

ha yeah I know it's not supposed to connect to the back but threw it in for referencing, I obviously don't know alot about electronics, slowly learning, but I got it wired to the left leg of the volume, would it work better on the center one? It works pretty well on the left but I'm all ears. Eyes. And I don't know who wired it, I bought it like this (minus the telecaster pickup and me chopping up it's insides) and it does act as a tone knob when in the 4 and 5 position.

I suppose that it will work better on the left lug of the volume pot, good call. If that tone pot wiring sounds good to you, that's all that matters, but yeah the wiring is strange, no cap, definitely different. :)

Would adding a capacitor improve the sound and tone? Because there's that extra soldering on the pot, and what looks to be a broken solder point on one of the legs. I always noticed the bridge was just a tad weak.

Hard to tell exactly how it is connected from the picture, so I don't know what it is wired for. Sometimes, players will wire one tone pot as a blender for the bridge and neck pickups, and use the other tone pot as a master. That's why I asked how it is wired, I can't tell. Maybe by studying the diagram you might be able to figure out what you have, it might be something cool like a blender, or it might be screwed up, who knows. Here's a Standard wiring diagram that shows both tone pots used as tone controls, the lower one for bridge and middle, the upper one for neck.

Well from that diagram you sent I'd say their set up just like it actually, because it shows the 2nd pot to not have a cap just like mine has, and the 1st one's got the cap.. I know maybe 1% about wiring, and that's to keep it grounded, everything else I'm always open to what experienced people have to say.

Maybe you should check again. Or, maybe I'm seeing things, but it doesn't look the same as the diagram to me. The one tone cap is usually connected to both pots, from the right lug of one pot to the middle lug of the other pot, it doesn't appear that yours are connected. And both tone pots are not usually connected together at the switch as it looks like yours are, they usually connect to separate lugs.

haha, yeah, you make a point there, as stated before there is a broken solder point like there used to be a cap on the tone pot... It does turn the tone up and down on the bridge though, or maybe it's blending?! I don't know the difference, I'll admit when I don't know something, and this is one of those things that's confusing me now.. Because yeah, I've seen the cap connect the two pots, but I've also seen people have caps on all the pots, but again, this is how I bought it, it came hooked up with some nice pickups, which sell for the price I bought the guitar for (a pleasant surprise) the guy I got it from got it from a trade for work and he doesn't play electrics, he just accepted it as payment.

Cool, there are so many options, to each his own. 8) I take it that your extra pickup is working OK? If you like the sound from your Strat, no problem, there is really no "correct" way to wire it. If you could take another close up picture from straight above, showing all three pots and the five position selector switch, I may be able to get a better idea of what you have.
