It's pretty close in configuration to a '68 or a '69 model.

That's a gorgeous piece of maple!

Thanks. When the Goto Kluson split post tuners go in, my mods will be complete - although I really hate the chrome string trees. But, I heard there is a pin hole under each one (like the modern tuners)? What was Fender thinking turning headstocks into swiss cheese with all these pin holes?? Very un-60's like.

Easy Joa! I know you don't want me drilling holes in the headstock, but I need split post tuners in this guitar!

Actually, if you're shooting for a late '60s vibe the tuners should be the Fender/Schaller "F" type, with the trapezoid base. Unfortunately, they're in chrome but they do have the split post a la the earlier Kluson types.

Really? Those goofy 70's looking "F" trapezoid tuners were from the late 60's? Do you know when they actually came out? Did Jimi's Woodstock Strat have them?

Update: I found this on a Fender tuner history site - good enough for me to use Kluson type Gotohs!

Klusons final years

Many believe Kluson went out of business in the early 70's, but the fact is they were around until 1981. They still supplied Fender with Stratocaster knobs until the end.

The "F" type Fender/Schaller tuners first appeared towards the end of the 1966 model year. AFAIK, second-sourcing for these parts was the brainchild of Forrest White (then Fender's plant manager) when it became apparent that Kluson could not keep pace with the demand after the CBS surge began. My '66 Strat (neck-stamp dated to January) had Klusons but a friend's '66 Jaguar from October had the Schallers. I think the Mustangs, Duosonics, Musicmasters, and Broncos were the last of the line to be converted over, occurring sometime in '69 or '70.

My problem is the new F tuners are probably made by Ping. I had several sets of Ping tuners that I threw in the trash because they were junk, so I don't plan on getting more Ping / F tuners, historically correct or not.

You may be right about that but I'd research the issue of who makes those "F" types thoroughly before deciding. The Pings are definitely NFG in any case. I routinely replace them on all of my vintage clones with real Klusons.

I'm having some sort of a déjà-vu. Thought I saw this thread somewhere else.

Nevertheless, I'm also thinking of putting a Callaham bridge on my Road Worn 60's.
But I don't know if it'll fit my MIM.
Will this bridge fit my MIM?

Thanks.

Callaham Vintage Hardtail Bridge

$69.00

Callaham 6 Vintage stamped steel "CG" saddles with stainless intonation and height adjustment screws, springs, and allen wrench. ("cg" not shown in pic),
nickel plated
Callaham top plate
with 3 stainless top plate screws
2 7/32 string spacing
Note on Hardtail bridges. All the lines are thin and elegant. If you are building a non-trem guitar, this is an excellent bridge.

You probably saw my post at Strat-Talk?

I think the MIM mounting is narrow, so 2 7/32 wont work. I could be wrong though.

No, you have no wood underneath to mount a hard tail bridge on the RW Strat, it is routed out for the trem block. Get the vintage spaced trem bridge (2-7/32), and deck it by tightening the trem claw screws, if you want the non-moving bridge. The RW has the vintage spacing (2-7/32). The Callaham trem bridge will drop right in. Mine did, I got the distressed model to match the RW, and decked it for no whammy use. P.S. You really need to change your block to the Callaham block with the new bridge too.

That's the vintage spec Callaham......a drop-on fit for your Roadword Strat.

You might want to get a nut that is cut for the old school bridge spacing. You may notice that the strings are not evenly spaced from the edge all the way down the fretboard now...
Personally I prefer the modern spacing. having my strings right at the edge of the fretboard bugs me... Use Callaham vintage narrow blocks and saddles on both of my guitars too.
