My 14th birthday was about a month ago and my parents gave me a Fender Starcaster. (Alot of people didn't know what that was but it's a cheaper version of a Stratocaster and it's made by Fender) Anyways, my parents don't really like my musical interests and don't pay attention to it which resulted in them not knowing that I'm a left handed guitarist. The guitar is right handed. Me and my friend decided to Jimi Hendrix Rig it because my parents will not let me sell or exchange it. We know we have to turn around the nut but we don't know if (scince it isn't a real Strat) if it can even be turned around without screwing up the sound or guitar. We also don't know if we need a new nut. Does anyone know what we need to do?

I'm not familiar with the starcaster. If it's nothing more than a stratocaster copy, then you should be able to turn that nut around without any problems.

Before doing this yourself, you might want to take it to a guitar tech and have them cut you a bone nut instead of using your old plastic nut (if you haven't already switched to bone before), that way you can kill two birds with one stone, 1. good bone nut. 2.Somebody else to do all this flipping around for you.

But if your like me and are always broke and end up having to rig up stuff yourself, then proceed to the next paragraph.

All you need to do, is to gently tap that nut from the side, don't start tapping harder if it refuses to let loose on the first couple of times, just keep gently tapping, it will sooner or later pop loose. Once it is out, you may notice some glue in the nut slot or on the back of the nut or both, completely take off that old glue.

It should fit perfect right back into that slot. You want it to fit as tight as possible, if for some odd reason it doesn't, alittle fine grit sand paper will work to sand it where it needs it, you probably shouldn't have to do this but you never know.

You might hear most people say to put a tiny drop of glue of some sort back on the nut before you put it in, this is all fine and good, but my suggestion is, if you can get the nut to fit as tight as possible, then don't put any glue on it, just make sure the nut is seated well against all three sides of it. Don't worry, even with no glue, it would pretty much take an act of congress to move that nut while the pressure of six strings are holding it down. Last time I filed a nut for my strat, I didn't glue it and it hasn't budged a bit, that was about 3 years ago and it gets abused and played almost every day.

Goodluck.

What a lot of my friends have actually done is learn to play true to Jimi and just flip the guitar over and learned to play that way. They like being able to bend the high strings down instead of up, and they still sound amazing. It's just a matter of preference and comfort. But my doctor plays ala-Hendrix and he chose to do so because selection is way better for righties.

That was actually my original idea and I've been doing that until about a week ago. I found it too hard to play chords and I didn't feel like wasting time re-learning the instrument. I'm recieving $500 so I'm gonna get a left handed Strat. A REAL Strat.

Good deal, Man! Can't go wrong! I have an American Strat, and it is definitely the most versatile instrument out there. You'll enjoy it, and w/o the hassle of hendrix-ing or steve-miller-shopping it!
