My question is this. I have never played outside my own home or with anyone, but would like to. Even form some sort of Band / Group just for the hell of it. How can you go about this without making a fool of myself in front of chaps that may be good and been playing for years..

What you'll discover is players of ALL skill levels are jamming with each other, playing in bands, and playing in public, too. You don't have to be good to play out. Playing in a group can be recreational rather than "for business and success."

Here in Georgia, USA, intermediate players meet at guitar stores or coffee shops at open mic night. I know of one coffee shop that has an open mic night, where groups or solo acts get time slots for 1 or 2 songs. The audience, often made up of family and friends is very encouraging and cheers like crazy for everybody--no matter how good the act is. Lots of fun.

Get involved with playing outside the hose ASAP. If you don't as soon as the idea springs you will over think it and think you need to learn more scales, More progressions, Etc, Before you know it you will have worked up so much angst on the subject that it will become too much of a mental i am not good enough barrier that you will never think you can. Do it NOW!

Hi Strat789

I'm older than you and play on a daily basis (mostly Shadows  ) and whenever the opportunity arises I play gigs with a Rock & Roll band.
It feels great. The public is in the same age range

Mr 789 Kind Sir,

An old man once told me, "You're never too old for anything untill you've lost your marbles.." I stopped and pondered- he was right

Unless your bonkers mate- you'll be right. Truth be told, most of us here are a little bonkers ourselves, but "hey- we're all ok!"

Thank you everyone for your encouragement.. I have drafted an ad for the local paper
So we shall see.. I do live in a smallish sized town but we have a decent Sheet music shop and a fair sized Guitar shop with professional studios above .. As everyone says I just want to do it for the sheer joy of making Music! With others.
Thanks to all.

Whoo hoo first post -

Long time lurker, this thread made me register.

Count me in with those who say its never too late to learn. I started in fits a few years ago, left and picked it back up last year at the age of 42.

I hae no dreams of being a professional, just to have some fun. Play the acoustic around the campfire with my family type of stuff. Maybe get good enough to jam with a friends garage band. Who knows? I'm having fun as it is. Like one person said, nobody is better at jamming on an open chord than me. I just hope to be able to put a few of them together someday soon.

Work, family, and the decision to go back to school has put practice time in a stranglehold, but I'm positive that I'll get there.

Oh well, sorry for the threadjack. Good Luck and have fun!

Brother, work, family, going back to school. Been there done that. It's not easy. I was in my mid 30's when I did it and let me tell you, it was a lot of work but the rewards are worth it, especially if your family is supportive.

There were a lot of nights after work, school, study and the family was all asleep that the guitar kept me from "losing my marbles" (loved that post by the way). Sometimes I would just hit the "I can't do this any more" wall, and picking up the guitar for a couple hours seemed to make it go away and let me sleep another night.

As someone who's been there and done that, I wouldn't look at it as practice. It's more of a huge cost saving over sitting on the couch in a psychiatrist's office. :)

No brother, funny, everyone starts somewhere.
I started playing on my 30th birthday 7 yrs ago,
No natural ability. Felt I had no eye hand coordination.
But I realized what was hard one day became a little easier
The next.
I very diligently learned my scales, began to play along
To backtrackings.
Putting yourself out there is scary yet soul rewarding.
I began with king of the blues comp at GC.
Currently working on getting a band together myself.

Indeed, my kind of stress relief!

I have a 2 y/o who gets into it as well. Maybe in the next year or so I'll be able to get him more interested in it. Something else for the both of us to do.
