With all the garbage floating around EBAY these days, how would one determine if he (she) were looking at a genuine Strat rather than a mongrel? For example - if someone were to put a genuine neck and bridge on some crappy "loaded" body and try to sell it as an "American"? Are there certain obvious things to look for without taking the guitar apart?

Thanks in advance everyone!

Bob

Familiarize yourself with the genuine Fender body. Look for obvious tell tale signs.
Things like Fender at no time made a plywood Stratocaster body :)
But mostly it comes down to knowing the body shape and little changes that happen per year. Like some that had the canoe routing, or the three little mounting holes on the MIM bodies. A good way to get and idea is to look on eBay at some of the reputable fender parts sellers and look at the ones they are selling. Look at the year. Does it look right for it? There have been too many changes over the years for anyone to educate you to all the changes and things to look for. This is one of those education thyself deals. That or deal with people you can trust in the first place.

Something else to consider, your ability to check it out. Not to be mean but don’t you want a guitar that is going to feel good in your hands? Don’t you want to check out the sound? How’s that neck profile feel to you? what’s that, you say you cant feel it threw the screen???
Do yourself a favor. A strats, a Strats, a Strat, is not true. each one you pick up has its own story and its own characteristics that make it uniquely itself. Ebay is the worst way to determine these things.

i would never buy a complete guitar on ebay. unless they had taken it apart and shown me all the serial numbers and documentation.

i know its a hassle, but it is better to buy parts separately on ebay. that way you can check every thing for the guitar, and verify it all.

and for some reason, there are lots of vintage fender necks on ebay, but not that many complete vintage guitars.
