I just got a Fender vintage "ashtray" bridge cover.

Apparently, it doesnt fit my bridge. It doesnt stay on in any way, Its like its too big foir my brdige, so I cant "press" it on.

Am I doing something wrong or is the bridge cover not attachable to MY bridge?

Ive got a classic 50s strat (wich has a vintage style bridge)

plz help

Rags,

Even though it's the vintage style, the string spacing on the imported bridges is less than that of their American counterparts. In other words, the cover you have is for American spacing and too big for your bridge. Unfortunately, Fender does not make an import compatible bridge cover.

You could try lining the lower level with some thick 3M tape or similiar and you might be able to get it snug enough to stay on. Good luck.

Bummer :)

What exactly is the "string space"?

And where exactly should I put the 3M tape?

The string spacing is the collective width of the saddles and the entry holes for the strings in the block which determines the distance of the strings side by side. On an American Vintage Bridge, the saddles are wider and their string entry holes are further apart (coinciding with the saddles) than that of the import, hence the string spacing is wider on the American vs. the import.

As to the 3M tape, that would line the lower inside sides of the ash tray cover in order to make the inner diameter of the cover smaller. Thus, the tape would snug the cover against the outer portion of both E strings' saddles which is what in fact, would be holding the plate on. Note that the fact that the tape comes in contact with both your E string saddles and possibly, a portion of your bridge plate. Consequently, the tape might serve as a damper or give a semi-muted effect with the cover on. Also, the cover might not flush up metal on metal against the plate and therefore, the cover will not be grounded

That's a great idea, to use tape (thick stuff like gaffers tape) inside to make the "ashtray" covers fit the narrow spaced saddles.

Another thing to try is to squeeze the ends together. Even if you have the right size cover, squeezing was sometimes necessary for a tight fit (so that the covers wouldn't fall off).

Its a metal cover to cover up your bridge.
Mostly for the looks.

With the cover on, it does make the guitar acoustically sound more metallic, which translates into a slightly more trebly sound when the guitar is amplified. Some claim that having the cover on also alters the magnetic field but I fail to see how, seeing that the cover is not hovering over the bridge pickup like a Tele's cover is.
