I have a American Strat that I was thinking of installing the LSR nut on, I would like to hear all of your thoughts on this matter pros and cons.
If you have personally installed this would you share your experience?
Thanks

Check this out - installing the LSR Roller Nut is spread over 3 videos - this is part one.

Not me. I have a Corian nut on my Strat. I had a little bit of bind when I went from a nine first to a ten, but I got a ten nut file and fixed the problem. Then I wrapped the nut file with a little bit of 600 grit and used it to clean up the rest of the slots a little. Carefully. Then I put vaseline in each of the slots, as well as under the the stock sting tree. And a little at the pivot point for the 2 point trem. And made sure that the springs weren't rubbing on the body at all (they had been rubbing a little and causing a tuning problem).

With all that done. I DO NOT GO OUT OF TUNE. I bend strings a lot, and I use the trem plenty...full floating. And like I said....I don't go out of tune. Song after song.

So I want to go to the trouble of a roller nut....why????

Moral of story: I think most tuning issues are at the nut. Smooth it, make sure the strings are sitting in it properly, and lube it every time you change strings. Done.

There are two reasons for wanting to change to a roller nut: reduction of friction of the strings going over the nut and changing string sizes. If you decide to step up on your strings then you can get serious binding problems, unless you take a file, wet & dry etc and start filing out the nut slots to suit your new strings.

With a roller nut you can change your string size as often as you like, going up and down the sizes, without any problems. Yes, if you are always going to stick with the same size, and never change it, then OK, you probably don't need the roller nut but over time strings can bind a little which necessitates cleaning up the nut. That doesn't happen very often but it can happen.

I put an LSR in my Strat, with the help of the videos I mentioned, and since then have had no binding problems or problems with the strings returning exactly to tune after bending/whammy bar use.

In the final analysis it's horses for courses! Whatever you want to do then do it - you're not going to get any down sides putting the LSR in (providing you put it in correctly) but you could get a few up sides!

If you're going to go to all the effort to install a roller nut then you prolly also want to install Schaller locking tuners. I think you'll find that any Fender guitar factory equipped with the nut also has the tuners. Be sure not to buy the regular Schaller (6 on one side) tuners as they will require some drilling in the headstock. You want the ones made for Fender guitars, the ones with the locator pin that ensures correct placement and orientation. They are a direct drop-in/bolt-on job. No muss, no fuss.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
