I recently purchased an American Standard Strat with a Z8 serial number. Does anybody know what type of pot capacitor is used with this model? I'd like to upgrade to an Orange Drop. I haven't had a chance to open it up yet.

Also, If I were to upgrade the cap(s) to an Orange Drop, what mfd value would be appropriate? If someone could weigh in and give me a basic overview that would be very helpful. Here is one page I've found that has an assortment of caps with different mfd values: http://www.guitarpartsresource.com/electrical_capsorange.htm

Thanks

I found this article which was very helpful:
http://www.electric-guitar-info.com/guitar-capacitors.html

In it, it says "Fender's mainstay is the .022 microfarad capacitor."

If anyone has done this modification, or has any guidance or additional information that would be appreciated.

Yes, an 08 American Standard Strat uses a .022 mfd cap. Unless the previous owner changed it. Stick with .022 mfd.

Open up your Strat, remove the exisiting cap and replace it with the new cap. Nothing to it. Here is the wiring diagram if you think you might need it:

I doubt you will hear any real difference in tone.

The effects of a change in capacitor are not that drastic. You may notice a smoother sweep across the pot, that's about it. I recommend staying with .022uf, upping the value to .033uf and beyond makes for a control that is too ready to dump all the treble.
