I know there are few of you fellow Clapton fans that own both an artist series and custom shop version of his guitars. My question being is the custom shop version really and truely worth the extra $2000?

The custom shop version is much expensive than the regular production versions because of the better construction, premium hardware and wood selection.

I get the custom shop version is a custom shop version obviously.

The question in terms of tone, playablitity, things of that nature. Is it really worth $2000 more for the standard "blackie" not the special color schemes. One is $1600 the other is $3800. Wanted to know from someone if you can really tell that much of a difference between the 2.

Well,

Tone - Relative and personal thing it can be worse or better. I recently had an eye on 06 used CS blackie that was going for $2000 CAD that was an utter garbage for example and I have type of salvage what you can personality.

Playability - CS is usually much better if no touched by the dealer (depends on the dealer). Playability can and most likely be one of the things to adjust to your liking if you plan on playing it.

I also looked at the sweet CS 62 closset classic, but than found for a $1000 less non CS 61 Reissue that I liked a lot better. So I guess "I was not ready".

I am not sure if you are familiar with cars but you can think of it in terms of
Toyota vs Lexus is it worth it?
Essentially the same platform but Lexus has refinements desired by same customers that are willing to pay extra.

Cheers

Dan

I am very familiar with cars, more so than guitars. I also don't like to spend money if I don't really need to spend it. The shops where I live are very limited in what they carry. I haven't even seen a custom shop guitar on the walls here. Saw one artist "blackie" a few years ago, but didn't have the cash to snap it up. The stores I have been to in the states when I am home don't have both artist and custom shop versions at the same time, so it has really been insane trying to compare these 2 models.

I feel your pain man, a while ago I was in the hunt for EC blackie (Toronto has a lot of them) and 4 CS, that I tried, except the mentioned used one were better than production ones. Since you mentioned that you prefer not to spend if you don't have to maybe production line is for you. Frankly for about $1000-1200 difference you get about 5-10% better instrument perhaps.
Also don't forget that EC limited colous will keep the value a lot better than production guitars. It is up to you to decide. To confuse you more you can go for the sure thing for a serious money and to invest into CS MasterBuit EC Blackie. This one will give you exact guitar and some more.

I ended up not getting CS EC and other mentioned CS model at all at the end, I fell for this 61 reissue. Surprised myself with that one

Hope that helps

That is the answer I have been looking for, thanks.

I don't mind spending money on a quality product, but why spend double for somethng that isn't double the quality. Not to say the custom shop isn't amazing, I 'm sure they are.

The special finish editions are cool for some, personally I can't tell much of a difference in the mercedes blue and the midnight blue on the CS versions. I actually loved the "antigua burst" model the put out just didn't have $5000 to buy it. If I had the cash I would have especially since some of the cash was going to the crossroads centre. If I can get a great guitar and help a great cause at the same time all the more better.

I just brought a 2008 Clapton custom shop Strat home. It's Antigua in color. I stumbled upon it in Nashville used. It's #53 of 100 made. Yes it's worth the extra money. It's so good, it can make the blind see and the raise the dead. Almost plays itself. I'm glad I didn't pass it by.

Are you sure you haven't been drinking a little bit of holy water? :D

I have a "10 CS Clapton and a '10 Am Dlx HSS. They are very different guitars, however I can say that the build quality of both is excellent. But the Clapton is nearly a pound lighter than the Am Dlx. So, there might be something to the wood the CS uses, as Chromeface mentioned.

There are notable differences between the TB and MB versions, the TB has the TBX and his signature in the back of the head while the MB uses a regular 250K tone pot and lacks off the signature on the headstock. Both guitars do not sport the micro-tilt adjuster in the neck as opposed to the regular Artist models....
