Ok

just to clear the air
i recently heard that the biflex truss rod is still a single rod just like the vintage truss rods but can also put downward pressure.
is this true?

it is not like the lets ibby truss rods that are double rods??

it has the same mass then a vintage truss rod?

thanks all!

It's a single rod. The name "bi-flex" refers to the way the rod can bend the neck concave or convex -- it doesn't mean it's a double rod. The mass of the bi-flex rod system is virtually the same as a normal Fender single-action headstock-adjust rod.

The adjuster is threaded onto the rod just like a normal rod. The adjuster is held captive behind the walnut tube/plug; when you tighten the adjuster the rod works just like a normal rod, but when you loosen the adjuster far enough it hits the back/inside end of the walnut tube and forces the neck to bend up (concave). There's a small "slack spot"/"neutral area" in between where the adjuster doesn't apply pressure in either direction. There's also an anchor/bushing under the 7th fret inlay (if you pop out the inlay you'll see the screw that holds the anchor) -- that keeps the rod from popping the skunk stripe loose when using the rod to apply upward pressure to the neck.

Several posters here say it's a double-rod with the adjuster welded to one of the rods. There are lots of double rods like that, but the bi-flex isn't one of them.

Ha! Never seen that diagram before. How interesting: thank you, strayedstrater.

News to me: now I'm itching to take a look under my seventh fret dot - but perhaps I'll leave it alone...

Cheers - C

That system was patented by Charles A. Gressett, Jr. 1983 Assigned to Fender 1985

The Bi-flex design is great......But I have seen 2 American Strats in the last few years where someone loosened the rod so much, it forced out the walnut plug! Always make your truss rod adjustments slowly, and never crank on the wrench like an ape lol :) The mass is about the same, BTW.
