budglo, unless you have one that is a pre '63 Strat, there is poly base coat on both finishes that you mentioned, so I can believe that there would be very little tone difference. Modern Strats are not the same as the all nitro finish of the originals. There is a difference in the tone of the original bodies finishes, with no poly underneath. The all nitro finish is part of the reason that the tone of those originals is so sweet.
Actually the guitar in question is a 59 thinskin avri.It has a nitro undercoat as well as the top coat.I believe the regular avri s are nitro over poly.

Nope Polyurethane undercoat on that, same as all modern Fender guitars.

Nitro V Poly = Utter tomfoolery. It's a visual difference and a way to part people with money.

I prefer tung oil on my strats. The guitar resonates much better with the tung, than nitro or poly, imho.

Okay so explain how you have a Strat finished in tung oil, don't leave us hanging....did you find an unfinished body and do it yourself, maybe then you ought to try a comparison with a Strat finished with boiled linseed oil,it might be better. :)
I used to read all the tung oil vs. b.l.o. and raw linseed oil in gun forums about rifle stocks, but I never thought I would read a tung oil post about Strats.

Nik, add to that summation the difference in durability and you are right on the money. There is a difference in feel to poly and nitro on the neck. Different hardnesses and all, and how they feel when polished/buffed. But there is no effect on tone.

Plus let not forget a body full of body filler, you no what mean 12b  really helps that wood breath!
With the old guitars can we say Fullerplast

It may be more understandable if you consider that nitro is made from wood. Wood product on wood will resonate differently than plastic on wood does. Also, the nitro doesn't seal the wood, allowing the wood to further age. But poly does seal the wood, preserving it in the same state of moisture content for much longer, and dampens the resonance. The differences are subtle, but noticeable by some. However, on modern Strats, there is a poly undercoating, even on the ones with a nitro finish, so it makes little difference now. The plastic undercoating can even mute the tonal differences between Ash and Alder bodies.

I have a '78 Strat that I had refinished 100% with nitro by the guys over at MJ Tele, no poly undercoat. No difference in tone.

Voodoo, what type of sealer did they use though?

You're right theres no difference in sound. It's all a hype to make something more desirable. When theres no need, we're treated like idiots by these supposed guru's that make such claims. Theres nothing wrong with either finish, I too have both. Cellulose looks better in it's traditional matte finish, though you can easily gloss it too. Urethane is bulletproof, and nice and shiny, if you like that finish.

Lets face it, aside from the backplate, paint is the least important thing about a guitar. Once the wood is sealed it's good to go.

DKoor, that puts the whole tonewood on electric instruments subject to bed, doesn't it. Thankyou.

I'm reluctant to post again on this subject,it never ends...but I own both finishes on different Strats, and for my money, the pickups are the biggest tone changing parts of a guitar, you can try different ones and get what you're looking for and it's cheaper than buying guitars with whatever types of finish the tone gurus are stating that's the latest greatest thing.
Then comes the amp.

Eric can tell you what brand of solder was used in wiring the amp just by hearing it. :)

I put together my own strats because I want all nitro. But I do this because I prefer the way that it ages and the reliced look over shiny and new. I don't hear any tone differences between the two, just visual.
