There will be plenty of full length photos soon. I'm still waiting on the gold knobs. They were a bit of an after-thought. If they don't arrive tomorrow, I guess it'll be next week.
These strings are SO nice :D to look at and play.

Image

I used them all the time when I had more disposable income. The gold wears off long before the life of the strings, but at least not on the headstock.

Thanks for your encouraging comments 53Magnatone and others.

They go for about $30 a set mate, but they are not easy to find. There are some on ebay, but the sellers want about $28 postage to Australia   and they seem to be in short supply in limited gauges.
They are made in Germany and the original company MAXIMA was taken over by OPTIMA a few years back. I get the feeling they are going or have gone out of business.
It's a great shame, they used to be readily available at my local guitar shop in the '80s.
They are fantastic strings, not just because of the gold plating, they just have strict quality control, I rarely broke one. They sound and feel new for a very long time. I had forgotten just how good they are.
Brian May swears by them. I wonder where he gets his. If you see some, give them a try.

Looking forward to the final pic's!

Hi Boxbang: I don't think Brian has any problems as they're readily available here in the UK too. This Ebay seller is offering them for £10.50 a set, which is about Aus$16.80:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Optima-Gold-Guita ... -Set-(9-42)_W0QQitemZ170520915137QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=214966278311&rvr_id=214966278311&cguid=4f9c438f12e0a0aa13232b33fed194bb#shId

And if he won't ship internationally then this shop is knocking them out for £10.95/Aus$17.50 a pop (including the Brian May custom set), and I know for sure they mail abroad, because on their "t&c" page they mention a standard charge of £3/Aus$4.80 for international shipping:

http://www.highlystrung.co.uk/acatalog/ ... rings.html

There ya go, mate: no need to be without that string-bling!

Cheers - C

Thanks Ceri, you're a legend. I'll order a couple of sets tonight. Good supply, good price, fair postage. Life's too short to go without the finer things.

I guess you're right about Brian having no problems getting them. Since his picture is on the pack, I bet they even give him a few sets for free
I still remember where I was the first time I heard Bohemian Rhapsody (and it wasn't watching "Wayne's World").

G'day 53mag, yes mate, I did look at those Abalone knobs, they're real nice, but not for this guitar. I also considered tortoiseshell ones but I went for the plain gold. The Abalone ones look great on yours. I would definitely use them on another guitar, in fact I'm a huge Abalone fan. I baby-sit the slimy buggers for a living, We export live seafood to China. I do a bit of inlay work on picks. I haven't dared to do a guitar yet.

Image

It's Friday night and the knobs didn't arrive, but here's a look at the full guitar so far.

I've decided to step out of my comfort zone and fit some nice pickups. I'm thinking gold lipsticks.

Wow - shazam!!! Is that your work, Boxbang? That is seriously dazzling!

Have you seen how much Stew-Mac charge for one ounce of assorted bits of abalone? And frankly yours looks much more beautiful.

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Inlay,_pear ... es#details

Why don't you run a little side-line selling abalone on Ebay? You could fund cartons full of gold plated strings with the greatest of ease!

How many sets of Brian May strings do I have to send you for three abalone pickup cover tops? Damn, now I'm fantasising about all the things we could smother in shell...Image

Cheers - C

+1

Very cool indeed! Those picks are great. If you can inlay on to a tiny fiddly pick, inlaying a headstock or fretboard should be no probs!

Have at it dude! :D

Unfortunately Ceri, the really vivid shell is from our New Zealand neighbors (Paua). The less stunning stuff is ours. The Paua though is not all that expensive. I got the full shell and the pieces on ebay. It's curved and has limited uses which is why they make composites.
I'll look into it for you. Maybe they don't post to the UK.
I do like to mess with exotic materials and picks are a good way to hone my skills without too much commitment.
Sorry to disappoint mate.
PS. Try this ebay link for the NZ Abalone pieces Ceri and check out their other products. The NZ stuff is definitely the most colourful in the world.

Hi again BB: well, we can buy the stuff here though imported is pricy. And of course we have plenty of our own oysters - I've just never seen anything local that looks as good as in your picture. New Zealand Paua, huh? Nice!

Also, what I'm suggesting is that you could "add value" (as the economists say) by working it yourself and turning it into stuff for guitars. As you've already done! Just for the starters, some people run full-time businesses just making high end picks - like yours.

Just a thought... Anyhow. Very cool looking: I agree with Andy - have at that headstock! We know you have the skills. 8)

Cheers - C

Well since I seem to be collecting Strats by country, ie Japan - USA - Mexico, the next project could be a Chinese Squier, so a nice dragon inlay on the headstock might be the go.
I added an ebay link for Paua shell to my last post in case you missed it Ceri.

Now, back to the naked Mexican.

Image

I'm pretty well sold on the GFS ProTube lipstick pickups (gold of course) and will likely invest in these unless I am advised otherwise. Two singles and a HB will fit straight in with no mods. Then I will have to look into various ''imaginative" wiring configurations.
