I know that mate. I was just backing up what you said to OL. The deluxes are great. How about a nice blue body with no chips, pearly white PG and ebony fretboard. I could live with that. Blue didn't fit into my plans.
I'm off to my PO Box now to see if the tremelo has arrived. It's the only non Mex part on the guitar.

G'day, Just to clear things up, this is not the actual guitar that I used.

Image

I posted this simply to give a fair representation of the guitar and to demonstrate that "beauty" is a matter of opinion. I will not debate aesthetics. My build will use new high quality parts and the body in the state I got it was not up to my standards.
The neck is correct for the model ,but purchased separately as is the gold hardware. I have a particular finish in mind and will strive to do justice to the Fender name.

Let me make sure I understand.

Your showing photos of two trans blue DP strats. The Tortise DP is yours and the White DP is the one you purchased for this project?

Love the whole natural wood thing! I am in the middle of a very similar project -- just refinished an alder body (two piece) that I stained dark walnut and finished off with many thin coats of tung oil. Came out with a nice hand rubbed finished - very low shine(Although I cheated a little-- I ordered a new unfinished body. The task of taking off the old paint was not one I was up to doing!) Also upgraded the hardware to gold and replaced the neck with a rosewood deluxe. Now I just have to choose between the new black pickguard or the original white (now tannish yellow) one. Maybe I'll post pictures and let you all decide!
Anyway -- can't wait to see your finished product!

Bud

Keep on pickin' -- what else is there?

No mate, you don't understand at all. You could not be more wrong.
OL, I will need the support of technically minded people like yourself for this project. I think the thread is fairly clear, but I will summarise so we are all on the same page.
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.

Photograph number 1
Image

This is not a Deluxe Players Strat. It is MY 2006 Custom Shop Custom Classic Stratocaster in pristine condition. I have not,nor would I ever refinish it or modify it in any way. It has a beautiful thin transparent nitro finish in Cobalt blue.
I posted it only to show that I do appreciate a finely finished instrument. The quality is exquisite and is a benchmark for this and all my future projects.

Photograph number 2
Image

This IS a Deluxe Players Strat. I DO NOT OWN THIS GUITAR. I do not particularly like the shade of blue, especially with the tortoise pickguard. These are high quality guitars. My project guitar body is from a 2006 model of this guitar, but not this ACTUAL guitar. The neck I will use on my project guitar is from a 2010 model of this guitar, but not this ACTUAL guitar.

Photograph number 3
Image

This IS the guitar body that I am using in my project. It is NOT the guitar in photograph number 2. It is definitely NOT the guitar in photograph number 1.
See the big chip at the bottom? There were several other chips on the back. These kind of chips are unrepairable on such a thick Polyurethane finish. I bought this body for the grain underneath at a a very good price. There was never a question of keeping the original finish.

Photograph number 4
Image

This is the project body as it looks now, the same body as photograph 3. See the reflection? I am using Polyurethane very sparingly along with some traditional French Polishing techniques to create a DEEP shine that you just don't get by spraying on lacquer, be it nitro or Poly, thick or thin. I am extremely encouraged by the results I have achieved so far. That brings us up to date. If you still don't understand OL, I will assume that you are just having a laugh at my expense. Any future negative comments will be ignored.

Hey Bud, I'd sure like to see that bare bodied Strat of yours and any others out there.
Thanks for your interest .......Mark

So why use "French Polishing technique"?
As I understand it, the finish is not very hard and is subject to stain from water.

I did understand from you vey first post that the the body in photo 3 is the project body, and understand that 3 became the body in photo 4. And before I say anything more I must say you have done a beautiful job on your project. I am interested in the process you used to get your finish.

In no way am I trying to have fun at your expense or mean any disrespect to you or your project. I was a little confused about the status of the two transparent blue guitars in the other photos. I get lost on these threads sometimes, and I fault it to my lack of patience with all the "side chatter" to the point I fail to pick up the important details, none-the-less the fault is mine.

As to my very first post let me explain. Personally I think the transparent finishes, including sunbursts, are the most beautiful finishes Fender produces. Currently I am chasing the formula for Crimson Red Transparent, as I have a naked mahogany body, that I purchased, that I would love to finish in that color. I saw this guitar at the GC in Jackson Mississippi about 2 weeks ago an fell in love with the finish.

The transparent blue on the Deluxe players is another beautiful finish. When you mentioned that you had stripped one of these for a project my personal feelings was one of shock. I should have kept my on feelings to myself and apologize if it seemed that I belittle you. From a practical standpoint I did not understand why not buy a body "in the raw" and save yourself all of that labor. But I guess you have your own reasons and we will leave it at that, it is your choice, and you have no need to justify it to me or anyone else.

I was witness to one of these refinishing jobs back in the 1970's. My brother was at LSU at the time and I was still in high school. My brother came home on the weekend with a Fender bass that belonged to a friend of his from college. The friend was adamant that this red bass become natrual wood finish. My brother undertook the challenge, and challenge it was! I would never want to wish removal of a Fender finish on anyone!

Carry on and I hope your project becomes everything you hope for, I will look forward to seeing the results! Sincerely, OL

Well pointed out Tyronne. You are absolutely correct. The traditional form of French polished wood is very prone to damage from heat and moisture. For this reason, I have substituted the traditional shellac with a polyurethene based substance. It is not simply a matter of coating the wood. French polish is a method rather than an actual substance. The wood must be penetrated and smoothed at a microscopic level to reflect the light in a certain way. This cannot be achieved by simply spraying on coats of finish.
I do have a little experience, but I admit what I am doing is mostly trial and error. I should have the body finished in the next few days and will detail the method used when I,m satisfied with the result. What I'm hoping for is the look of highly polished wood, not lacquered wood. I'm 98% there. Stay tuned mate.

PS. no worries OL

Hi Boxbang: ha! I'm late clicking on this thread but I'll be following it from here on.

What a great piece of grain on that Ensenada body. Frankly, you couldn't fault that if it came from Corona or the CS. Nice!

Can't wait to hear about this polishing technique. Will there be plenty of detailed photos of the process? Please? :D

And to oneal lane: I don't have a conclusive answer but I'd be delighted to discuss formulas for translucent red finishes if you want. Maybe on a dedicated thread? :)

Cheers - C

Yup the "Transparent" colors are gorgeous!

For me...I've just fallen in love with "Wine Transparent". I can't get this color out of my head! I need to have this guitar..with a rosewood neck too.

Ceri,

That would be great. I posted a thread last week I think "crimson Red transparent" I will go revive it.

Hi OL: I've now seen and added to that thread. As I expect you've discovered. :D

Now. Back to nude guitar bodies... :D

Cheers - C

PS: which word sounds more rude - naked or nude?
