Small things this week.

KNOBS

Image

I posted my idea for the gold coin knobs, but I couldn't just stick 'em on top.

Image

So I got some of these inlaid ones.

Image

Unfortunately, I had to ruin the Abalone inserts. I didn't want to risk damage to the gold edge by trying to lever them out, so I drilled through the centre and prized them out with a small screwdriver, snapping the glue bond.

Image

They're not expensive these knobs and I can think of hundreds of customizing ideas-
matching wood, pickguard material, even vintage picks. I guess they come in chrome and black.
They fit my little replica coins almost perfectly. A bit of 24 hr epoxy glue, clamped in. No worries :)

Image

They look great, like they were made by a jeweler.
My little gesture of respect to Mexican quality, and I still have a full set of plain gold ones to swap 1-2 or 3

I HOPE YOU ENJOYED MY KNOBCRAFT.

I'll be back to discuss more small things.

I'll go with the plain gold neckplate now.

Image

I wanted to include the Mexican eagle and snake insignia somewhere. I have the knobs now, so that's sorted.

Next, I noticed how rough the routs were on the inside edges of the pickguard. These edges are noticable with my type of pickup, mirrored in fact.

Image

Image

I used files and sandpaper to tidy up the edges. It takes more work than you'd think.

Image

I fitted a US roller type string tree. This sits a bit higher than the standard butterfly tree, but so far no problems.

Image

The strings stay in the nut even when played hard. I had a problem with the old one grabbing the strings but that's now fixed. The graphite powder in the nut helped too, no doubt.
Next, I made some little brown leather cushions for the strap buttons.

Image

Image

This small detail makes a surprising difference to the overall natural look of the guitar.
.....and finally, the switch tip. This was not easy to find.

Image

That's not plastic, nononooo. Gold plated stainless steel, sweeeeeet.

I think I'm just about ready to declare the build complete.

Good job! 8)

I have to say I'm not usually a fan of gold hardware but your Strat looks pretty cool! Any chance of a slightly bigger pic for all us pic hungry forumites?

Also... Hope this isn't to late...

BTW....

Thanks Andy, Yes, I pride myself in my photography.

Image

This much gold would be too much for some guitars but I reckon I get away with it on this body. It brings out the gold tones in the wood and far from being ostentatious, it's actually less in your face than chrome or white plastic. On the tortoiseshell, it has a classy antique look.

Image

I seem to be limited to this size picture with my current photobucket (free) arrangement. I would like to post some a little bigger if anyone has any suggestions or can do it for me.

Image

Since I saw the 53 prototype elsewhere on this forum, I'm feeling pretty good about my bare bodied 3 piece :D

Andy mate thanks for the wiring diagram, I think I actually get it. I'll play it like this for a while and probably won't include the coil split in this thread for now, I have the push /pull pot now. Cheers for all your support man.......CHEERS X 6.

You might see a thread in the future titled "Help Andy Help"

Wow! Great work, love the gold with the color of the body. You really hit it just right - the gold is an elegant and subtle choice.

Now, if you are tired of it yet, please send it my way, and I will gladly paypal you $250. After all, it is a lowly MIM.

Great work, including the photography. That is a hobby of mine, too, they go so well together.

Hey thanks Impulse7,slyd,futboljim.

I guess I won't throw her on the wood pile.

Image

G'day slyd, I just found your nekkid Squier build. Cool 8)

I had never really considered Danish oil until I saw Andy's project. It seems like a good way to achieve a similar result to mine, although mine is very hard wearing.

I think the important things are - penetration and hardening of the wood and fine sanding (that is, Time spent).

Image

For my next bare body, I would probably use many many coats of Danish oil alternated with fine sanding up to the ridiculously fine 3000 grit paper. In my opinion, this would give magical result. Hmmmm .......wood is indeed good.

"Wood IS Good", yup, that's the one :D

Danish oil can be poly'd, or varnished after 3 day's dry time if you want a gloss. Or use (what I've only recently found) "suede" poly :P

All builds are great guys, each has it's own personal character

Hi Mark,

I too have a free Photobucket account but I've not encountered a cap on the size of pic's uploaded. I use Picasa to resize my pic's to 640 x 480. That's a pretty forum friendly size, big enough to see the detail yet small enough not to alter the page/post width. I then upload to Photobucket and spam the forum, like so...

Image

Enjoy! :D

Andy

Yeah, 640 x 480 is std eMail size, and gives a good size pic to see.
