Hello Fender fans, I'd like to share my latest project with you all. I'm planning a Mexican HSS Stratocaster with a plain polished Ash body.

I started with this rather sad looking Deluxe Players body ('06 I think)

Image

As you can imagine, the finish was not easy to remove. It's about an inch thick and highly noxious. I did this by hand with course sanding belts on a cork sanding block on the flat areas and rolled up on the curved bits. T'was a NASTY,NASTY,NASTY job, but I persisted. For incentive, I have some gold hardware and this nice new grainy Rosewood neck.

Image

The grain on the body is not perfect but nice, 3 pieces joined up quite well and once the blue Muck was removed, the finer sanding was a much more pleasant process, enjoyable in fact.

Image

I've finished the inner cavities in gold paint, simply because I was sick of the sight of that blue $#!+.
The final finish will be a process I've been working on, based on ''French polishing'' techniques, but with a tougher surface. I won't give away too much just yet in case it fails (It won't :D ) I don't want a lacquered look, not even thin nitro, just the look of highly polished wood. It's looking promising so far but will take many more hours over several days

Image

I now have most of the parts I need, so the build should come together soon. I will update regularly. Thanks .....Mark.Image

That proves there are good MIM bodys (higher priced series) available. Fender Mexico puts out some great guitars during the last years and IMO they are getting better and better.

Cheers,
Robin

I like the project you have in mind! Although, I would never remove the finish from a body if the finish was still in good shape. But what's done is done I suppose LOL :) Be sure to show us pics on how it turns out!

Next time for sanding use an orbital sander, hook it up to a Wet Vac so you can dissipate the dust which by the way is toxic. So I hope you used both a mask as well as goggles that seal around your eyes.
Yes you can ingest fine particles from around your eyes which can result in an eye infection.

As a wood worker I dislike all the safety equipment but the alternative scares me into using it nevertheless.

Nice grain pattern....

G,day Steve, It's OK mate. I bought this body specifically for the project. I could see that it had some interesting grain underneath. The finish wasn't too bad, it did have few big chips. I'm not a big fan of that particular shade of blue and since I already have a tranparent blue CS Strat, I couldn't wait to strip it.

I won't be sanding this down any time soon  Image

All that sanding, what happened to paint stripper?

Great job though, can't wait to see it finished.

Hey Nutter,

I have two builds which qualify, as a matter of fact I should be back in the Dungeon Shop
applying another coat of Polycrylic to the neck ( as soon as I'm done typing ) and then applying the logo and name ( Stratopartster )

Interesting!
I've had the same thoughts of doing something like this with the glut of MIM Strats and Teles I've see popping up on CL and Flee-Bay.

Hmmmm...
Looking forward to the progress you make.

Yes the Mexican stuff is great. I got this bod dirt cheap in an e-bay auction. The thing about the transparent finish on the Deluxe players series, is you can see what your getting. Check out the grain on this one.http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-2010-Fender- ... 336178b8ff

I've decided on tortoiseshell to compliment the browns in the wood.
Here's the neck with the gold vintage tuners fitted.

Even the headstock has some nice grain. :D :D Image
