First you should inquire into your own state's Tax laws concerning buying out of state merchandise, If taxable there is nothing you can do about it.

It's up to the border customs whether or not they will charge you tax. The only way is for the sender to not post the invoice on the outer packaging so that customs will see that it is indeed a purchase. When I bought from Ishibashi, my strat flew through our border without a hitch :)

You can come up here to Oregon, we do not have a sales tax.

We do not have border customs between states, interestingly states have their own laws concerning commerce and it's taxation.
One of the reasons why so many corporations that operate on the East coast are actually registered in other friendlier states.
Many Credit Card Banks are registered in Idaho, Colorado, Nevada.. This practice has actually returned to bite us in the bud since it's one of those financial " Zero Sum Games " which although profitable for the short term, becomes a compounding expense in the long term. :?

I live in California and buy things at times from Music123. I don't pay state tax at the time of purchase but be aware of this...

It is not a fact of you don't have to pay state taxes. In most states residence of that state are required to pay sales tax on any purchase regardless of where it is made. Now what happens in that a company that operates, lets say i Missouri, is not set up to COLLECT and REMIT sales tax for other states, for example California.

It is the responsiblity of the consumer to report and pay the applicable taxes on their state tax returns for these types of purchases.

I am sure though that most of the time the majority of these purchases goes unreported hence the ongoing attempt by many states to figure out a workaround. For example, large retail operations like Guitar Center that have retail locations in the majority of states, will charge applicable sales tax for the state they are shipping an internet purchase to. So to be completely free and clear of having a tax burden you have to order and deliver to a state that does not collect sales tax.

I've rarely been charged sales tax buying from Amazon, and they do sell Strats via Musician's Friend ("Sales tax added for MO, UT, IN, and WA orders"). Or you can buy it straight from Musician's Friend, either way, no shipping or sales tax

Then there's always eBay. . .
