Just bought a used, mint condition Eric Johnson model strat, but it has a string tree on it. I'm confused because my understanding is that the EJ models don't have/need string trees. This was an early model, 00586. Did they used to come with trees? Anyone know? Thanks

No, the EJ never came with a string tree but I do recall reading posts on the web during the first year they were out that some owners decided to add a string tree to their guitars.

Fully understandable to add a tree, staggered height tuners just don't provide enough down pressure behind the nut on their own.
It could be a replacement neck, have you had a look at the heel?

With an EJ Sig there's an easier way of verifying the authenticity of the neck. See my post on scottatjoy123's other version of this thread:

Sorry mate I missed that, but you're absolutely correct regarding headstock thickness.

S'OK: it's what happens when a poster accidentally double-clicks "submit" when starting a thread, so there's two on the same subject running simultaneously. Thank goodness nobody's done that when starting a build thread: I guess that would mean they'd have to build two guitars at the same time just to keep everyone happy!

PS: has anyone noticed - Nick seems to have himself a fan. Sort of... Is Knitgirl back in yet another identity?

I hadn't noticed.

I'm that uptight about next week its unreal, and the boilers bust, and the dog's limping. And the other band is coming together nicely, but I can't do two....

Time to crack the scotch open and put some Motorhead on. Saw the film earlier, that bloke should be a part of the national curriculum.

I just built two custom strats and added a string tree to each.Didn't need them "at all" but I just like the look better(looks naked without a tree and Bob Ross always thought that way in his paintings). The old style round string trees only please and not the butterfly type(yuk).

Consider it free advertizing, any fear of a link?

Thanks for the input everyone. It is an early make. March 2005 EJ00586. I took the neck off just to make sure and it's stamped EJ March 2005. It's authentic.
