When I purchased my AS in summer '05 the set up was perfect, Cheerio to my dealer "Uli's Music" in Cologne, well done! But of course, through the years, since '75, I've done it all, except refretting which is a quite special job and the lack of experiece inhibits me to do it. In my opinion it builds up a closer relationship between the baby and myself and it feels like being a part of yourself if you understand what and how it works while you're playing.

Cheers from Cologne/Germany!

I am curious as to how many of you work on your own guitars.
Do you change strings?
Do you change electonics(pups and pots)?
Do you set up bridges for intonation?

That's all stuff that is easy... so I do it myself...

I don't like the idea of swapping necks... OTOH, I'm a new Fender player and never owned guitars that just unbolted before <G>

How about more inticate work like fret jobs, refinishing and routing for new electronics?

I spent about 30 years working on electronics for the government... guess I could fix a wiring problem if I needed to... actually I'm trying right now to identify a Strat FSR model that I got with no part number...

A Black and Chrome HSS with engine turned black anodized aluminum plates for the pickguard and back cover... Big knurled early Telecaster domed knobs look pretty good against that all black background...

Even the headstock is black with a Chrome "Fender Stratocaster" ...

Hard to get the right schematic without taking it apart unless you can reference it to something...

I have been working on my guitars for 25 years, and I am surprised at how little work most players do on their own beloved axes.
Just a thought......

I had a fella change my strings once... it was part of a repair job on a broken neck/head that I just didn't want to mess with...

He did such a good job and charged so little that I had him chance some other strings just to make sure he was making some money<g>

These days my 11 year old son won't let anyone else change strings now that I've taught him how I like them installed... so I'm out of that business too<VBG>

Maybe when he gets the Squire Strat he's saving up for he'll let me work on mine again<G>

He better get it soon... my Strat is getting lonely and insecure in a closet full of Gibson, Epiphone, Taylor, Yamaha and Takamine cases...

I'll do everthing on my solidbodies. For the hollow bodies, I'll leave the electrical stuff to the techs. It's such a pain to have to work thru those damn F holes.

Yes, I work on my own.

But I haven't done fret work.

That's another thing that I work on myself, my "car". The price of labor at an auto shop is ridiculous. Plus, just my like guitar, nobodies going under the hood of my car except me. Sometimes if I have to, I'll pay to have it hooked up to diagnostics to tell me whats wrong with it and then I fix it myself. Usually diagnostics is around $50 bucks, I can live with that.

http://www.autotap.com has a nice ODBII read/write unit that hooks up to a computer.

It can show multiple readings on different parameters simultaneously... and even display round or digital gage indicators for whatever parameter(s) you're watching... for about the same price as a decent hand held unit... (or four trips to the dealer to have it "read"<g>)

I love being able to test drive with it hooked up, and then replay the recorded data back...

It's sort of sad, but most of the "mechanics" that's I've met lately have more certifications than experience...

My current guitar project is to get out the electronic formula book and figure out what the frequency response of the "tone" controls are on my HSS Strat... and then add some balance pots to bring the Humbucker coil's volume a bit closer to that of the two single coil pickups...

The tool of choice there is my O'scope where I can SEE the volume of the signal off the pickups...

Whenever the supposed "luthier" in question tells me.........."I 've never tryed that"..........I take my guitar home and once again do it myself.
