I am curious as to how many of you work on your own guitars.
Do you change strings?
Do you change electonics(pups and pots)?
Do you set up bridges for intonation?
Do you swap necks?
Do you adjust your truss rod?
How about more inticate work like fret jobs, refinishing and routing for new electronics?
I have been working on my guitars for 25 years, and I am surprised at how little work most players do on their own beloved axes.
Just a thought......

i do all my own minor work on my guitars, minus the intricate jobs just as refretting and refinishing as i dont have the equipment.
i'd definately give it a go if i have the right gear.

I do everything except fret work and refinishing.

I have even done guitar work for others.

Everything listed above except for refretting. Had some trouble the first time I put in new pick ups.

I change my strings, change my electronics and set-up my guitar. Haven't had to change the neck yet but I would if I needed to.
re-finishing and re-fretting I can't do

Same. I'm too scared to do anything else and mess up the guitar.

I do almost everything but don't have the equipment for some of the heavy duty fretwork or refinishing.

With the exception of the 50th Anniversary Strat and my Deluxe Powerhouse Strat, all of my guitars are built by yours truly. Including my newest, which was a mistake of sorts, long story. It started with a search for a body for my Powerhouse and just went down hill fast. http://www.fender.com/community/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4990

But yes, I love the feel of doing it yourself. Most of the guitars I have built have been via pre made parts. Bodies, necks, etc. A few times over the years though I have built a few starting with just raw material. 4 electrics and one acoustic..
I too have been sawing at the guitar for 26 years now and build not only for the individually, but also for finding those new tones that sing to you and stand out in the mix.

I do everything, nobody touches my guitar.

Unless of course it needs refretting, but that's it. And then I run a background check on the guy that's doing the refretting.

Nobody can be trusted.

I have changed strings, pickguard, pickups & added a spring. I want to do a setup. My question is the set up guide here on Fenders website has the measurements for the pickup height from the strings as all the same. When i see guitars in the store or have them set up the bridge is closest to the strings and the neck pickup is the farthest from the strings .

Why does Fenders set say set all 3 pickups 4/64th's from high E & 5/64ths from low E?

My sentiments exactly, no one has touched one of my guitars in 21 years. This dates back to two incidents, one where I paid a guy at a large dealer to do a setup, and ended up going out and buying "The Guitar Handbook" by Ralph Denyer, and learning to do it myself. The second was when I had another dealer install a roller-nut in my new 1987 American Standard
Strat. When I picked it up he exclaimed "It was weird! I hit metal when I recut the slot!" I asked him if it had anything to do with the new (at the time) Bi-flex truss rod, and he just stared at my like I was speaking Mandarin. He had over cut it, and filled with epoxy, I also found out later (too late to make him pay for a new one), that he had stripped the hex socket on the truss rod - probably took it to far thinking it was a traditional rod. I saw him years later at a Mars Music store, working as the repair tech (I won't use the term "Luthier")
I have a 16 year-old Start Ultra that may need a re-fret some day, but I don't know who I would trust - I'll probably just try to level it out myself first - I can't do worse than most of these guys!
