Anybody ever have their black fret markers on their maple necks wear off? A few of mine are turning a strange light gray - not uniformly, but starting at one edge. Might have to post a picture to let you see what I'm talking about.

Not concerned about it - it's just a dot after all and I really like the worn maple neck look. Just wondered why the black dots are the only thing that seem to be wearing and why they're just kind of turing gray in spots, not really "wearing" like I'd expect.

BTW, it's a 2002 Am Series Strat I bought new in 2002.

Yes, same phenomenon as on my EC signature. It started somewhere at the edge of the dot and covers approx. one third of it. No idea if it increased, I sold the axe in summer 05. I have no exact explanation but I guess it got leaking and some air or humidity slipped under it.

Cheers!

EXACTLY! That's how it looks to a tee! I suppose air or something could have gotten to it - but it's weird because the neck really isn't worn that much yet. Anyway, glad to see that at least I'm not the only one!

This sounds similar to what another guy here on the forum was talking about happening on his neck, it looked kinda cloudy. But his was like that from day one. You guys say this is just starting??? Or has it been like this since new???

No, not from day one, it just started once on two or three of the dots.

Same here - noticed it on the third fret first, then the fifth fret. Just last night I noticed that the double dots at the 12th fret (on top of the neck if you're holding the guitar and looking down, not the ones on the fretboard) have completely turned "milky" and faded gray. That's what prompted me to post this, as it appears to be spreading.

I'd say I first noticed it happening about two years ago.

I've heard of cleaning products meant for rosewood causing this when used on maple.

Definitely not the case here - I've owned it since new and have never used anything to clean the neck (besides maybe wiping it off with my t-shirt when I change strings or something).

Ah, no biggie. Doesn't effect playability or sound any. I guess it'll always be easy for me to identify which one's mine (should the unlikely event occur that I lose it in a stack of Am Series 3-tone 'burst Strats)! :P

I'd have to see it, but it sounds like something in the dot composition, is reacting with the finish, and the finish has separated away from the dot, causing a thin airspace to form. If you have ever seen how an impact on a painted clear finish will cause it to separate from the surface below, it would be a similar result, while the cause would be different. you sometimes see a sliver of this also when a Gibson finish shrinks around the pearl logo. Just a guess though, without seeing it.

Yes sir, exactly what I experienced on a LP back in the '90s. And yes, crump, indeed it's not a big deal, you won't even feel it when you rub over it, right?

Actually, you can feel it if you rub your finger over it lightly...but like I said, not worried about it.
