hey guys, quick question
i currently have the option of choosing between a '95 American Standard Fender Stratocaster brown sunburst with rosewood fret board, or a brand new Standard American Fender Black with maple fret board.

I personally like the visual look of the '95 better, but that takes a backseat to the sound and feel etc.

Assuming both are in perfect condition and same price, which one is better?
I cant seem to find any info on the type of pickups used back in '95 either.

cheers!

p.s. any inclination towards which would create a more bluesy tone (kinda like a John Mayer sound) would be good too, even though i know he uses custom scooped pickups
:)

which one feels better to you....that's the most important question. take turns plugging both into the same amp (if you can A/B them) that will give you a better idea of which sounds more to your liking. i've played some great sounding '95s and and some crappy sounding new strats and mim's that have played better than american strats, bottom line one of the two will speak to you more...make you not want to put it down.....that's the keeper. imho

Hmm... This question has me thinking. What year did FMIC stop using swimming pool routs? :?:

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Fender stopped using the "bathtub" route in 1998 when the American Deluxe series models were introduced.

The last batch of 1st-generation American Standards and a couple of Artist signature guitars (such as the original Jeff Beck Stratocaster) made after that date came with an H/S/H route.

I think 1998-2000 was a transitional period for these instruments.

I have a '93 plus that I prefer over my Deluxe which has the modern rout. It really sings better and has more resonance and tone unplugged which does make a difference. I urge you to play the '95 to see what I mean. There are haters of pool routs and I personally prefer them. You really need to have a good play of one to be able to judge it. Pickups are 'American Standard' but if you want to get a more bluesy tone I would swap them out and personalise the tone yourself. Good luck!

The 95 hopefully will be a little less $ than the 2010 ! I have a 1996 Strat and love it, and it has GREAT stock pickups! The newer strats have a good feeling neck, but my '96 has a thinner neck......at least it feels that way. If you can get the 95 for less cash, it could be a great choice. But it will ultimately come down to what feels and sounds right to you :) You will not go wrong with either one though!

thnx guys,
i managed to find a great local music shop willing to sell a brand new american standard strat for a very reasonable price (due to a price-match) and it sounds great!
Of course i will probably change out the pickups later on, ideally id love to get some Big Dipper pickups from fender, but they're impossible to find cause they wont sell 'em seperately (if you guys happen to know someone who could help me out, lemme know :D ).
Otherwise ill have to try some out and then get them custom wound.
You guys have been a major help,
many thnx :)

in fact getting them custom wound will hopefully help me get my own unique sound.
btw, anyone ever wonder how Mayer first got his? was his guitar just like that or would he have set out to build the best pickups?
lol just musing now...

the pickups in JMs black guitar aren't Big Dippers, Fender Designed the BDs for john mayer's signature series but he hardly ever plays those in concert

yeah i noticed that... i thought it was odd that the 83 black1's had "custom wound pickups" listed, but the production line pickups had big dipper listed, the same as his sig series.

You know i truely believe that no-one will ever truely capture his tone (unless he decides to tell us specifically). there will always be speculation...

I work in a pawnshop in Los Angeles, a few years ago a late 90s Fender Sunburst American Standard came out for sale, when I looked at the pickups
I realized they were flat pole
Magnets that were very large,
It had a very fat and rich sound
That reminded me of John Frusciante of The Red Hot Chili
Peppers, love love loved the guitar but it was out of my price
Range, and Sadly was sold,
That being said, a mid-2000's
American Standard Strat came
Out about a year later, it had
The thinner "staggered pole"
Pickups in it, it had a much more twangy "square wave"
Tone to it, a really nice guitar
But I always had a place in my
Heart for that late 90's Strat,
Like a girl you met and lost touch with, but you occasionally
Thought of and missed, this story does have a "happy ending" lol Earlier this year
A 95 Black American Standard
Came out for sale, it had those
Glorious big flat pole pickups
Like the late 90's one that slipped through my hands,
I wasn't going to let this one go,
So I bought it, and I LOVE THIS
GUITAR!!!
