For those of you that have played a real 1962 stratocaster, you know that the neck has absolutely nothing in common with those thin, weak little '62 reissue necks (those '62 reissue necks have the same profile as a 1965 strat). A 1962 stratocaster neck is badass (it's like an early 70's profile, except a little larger), and it annoys the hell out of me that, rather than reproducing that neck for '62 reissues, fender just uses the perception of the 1962 strat as a sales tool.

I'm putting together a strat and I was wondering if there is a neck that Fender currently makes which actually is made to the specs of a 1962 stratocaster? I think I'm going to have to buy a boatneck and the shape the profile to get rid of the V on the neck at the first few frets. Any help would be appreciated.

The neck on my '62 Reissue Hot Rod is fuller than any other Fender neck I have, but I'm not sure if they're available or what Fender calls them....but I really like it and I have played a lot of vintage Strats...this one feels great to me.

Isnt a 62 neck basically a D profile but with a slight V on top and 7.25 fretboard then?

I thought in the 60's necks started to get thinner, maybe they didnt start until 65?

I've played a few real 61s,62s and 63s, and most of the necks weren't chunky in my experience. Thats the thing about vintage guitars, they weren't that consistent. There really is no such thing as a "62 profile" as they all varied.

The Mark Knopfler guitar has a '62 neck. I'm not sure how it compares to an original '62 or the reissue '62, but it is alot more chunky than the current American Standard models. This has become my favorite neck. Has great feel, and I really enjoy the 7.25 radius. With the medium jumbo frets I have no problem with bending.

@smedleybutler Mate,i do not know what your talking about.I have two 62's and a 63 and a 2012 reissue and the neck on the 62 reissue are almost identical to my originals(if they wernt i wouldn't have bought one). The 63 is a little bigger, maybe the one you played had a different neck on it?

My friend also has one ,and its quite thin also with the slight "C" or some say "D".
They are very nice neck to play, all four of them,in fact the reissue is better than one of my original 62's!

I have owned a few over the years and a few of them have been lemons and none of them had chunky 70's like necks????

Got to agree with SammyII here. The Vintage 62 I owned was very much like the 62 reissue necks. But also remember back then they were still hand shaped and were not consistent, so maybe they varied based on production levels and who was shaping them!
