Great ideas and I will have to ponder them futher. I think I mentioned this earlier in the thread. I starting thinking about the middle band on the 3 color sunburst Fenders. The middle band is somewhat of a translucent red and I suppose its a combination of amber and cherry and clear over all of it as the last coat.

Does that make sense?

Ceri, I don't mind at all if that you used that pic, as long as there's a chance it can help some one out, or add to the discussion. I would have to add though, that shot was taken backlit by the sun, it looked darker under normal lighting.

That lacquer would get you pretty close to the 3-tone burst red. Personally I am not a real stickler for 'exact' shades, but rather finding one you like. my CA red isn't the same as Fender's (I like mine better, nut that's because i mixed and sprayed until i found what I liked.)

The red band is actually 2 different bands of lacquer, at least on the really old ones.

But back to the topic at hand. I would think your best bet for a dramatic finish like that on mahogany would be to tint your grainfiller dark, maybe even black, then spray a red tinted lacquer, and then clear over that.

OL: If you haven't started yet, could you post a couple pictures of both the body you have, and a couple prime examples of the finish you want, then we can spitball some ides of the best way to get you there, and some variations that might work. I find with translucent finishes sometimes you let the grain pattern of the piece of wood decide how to proceed. like what's the grain like, etc.
