I'm going out on a limb here, but my guess would be that you could imitate closely with candy apple red color.
Since candy apple red is usually applied over a gold/silver flake base, it is somewhat transparent depending upon the number of applied coats.
I would experiment with that then apply clear over the candy red.
How many underlying coats of clear below the candy red and how many coats of clear over the candy is going to be up to you as you experiment/test on scrap alder or ash..

Good Luck.

The Crimson Red Transparent was offered on the early American Deluxe guitars and basses produced between 1998 and 2000 and the 1st Generation Highway One models from 2003 to late 2005. It's now available on the American Standard Series Telecasters since 2008.

You might look here for finishing supplies......

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Finishing_s ... tains.html

Blending the "cherry red" and "red mahogany" in a 2:1 ratio or thereabouts may approximate Fender's Crimson Red Transparent color.

Best of luck, HTH

Here's a Crimson Red American Deluxe (not mine) from the first year of production:

Image

Another Crimson Red Deluxe (not mine, of course) made in 2000. This particular guitar was originally an HSS model with an Atomic humbucker in the bridge paired with 2 dual-coil Ceramic Noiseless pickups in the neck & middle positions and an LSR Roller nut.

The owner has replaced the LSR roller with a bone nut, installed an EzyGlider string tree and swapped the original Fender pickups with a set of Kinmans. A K9 harness and a push-pull pot were added for a wider array of tones.

Image

Popping the knob out with the pickup selector switch in position 2 re-connects the Bridge & Middle from parallel into series for boost in output and instant humbucker-like crunch and the neck pickup in parallel for fat hollow Knopfler-esque sounds.

This might work better than my suggestions, all in all it's about experimenting until you find the right mix and method.

This is a 01 MIM DEluxe in Crimson Red

The knobs look much like those found on the early 1980s "Strats".

Yeah but those knobs didn't make the final cut.

This is how this MIM began.

Here's the guitar as it is today

Thanks guys,

Retro,

Actually, I had been looking at the StuMAC Nitro supplies and had given thought to the mahogany/cherry red blend. Your suggestion reinforces the notion, so I think it may be the correct track

I saw a strat in a guitar center in Jackson Mississippi in this color about a month ago and fell in love with it.

Well I thought it better to be proactive and offer some actual suggestions rather than merely post pics of red guitars. I think mahogany under a dark cherry stain would look uber-kewl, perhaps with a black 3-ply pickguard a la the Gibson SG. I've been thinking about that cosmetic combo myself for some time now.

Best of luck, let us know how it goes.

I have several right now and there are sure a lot of variations on this color. Some are a Crimson Burst Metallic and others are a plain Crimson burst. Some have darer edges. All you can see Ash through the finish but some are more transparent than others. I think this color is hard to make consistent when spraying, as the darkness can vary depending on how many coats of the transparent finish are applied and even how much clear is over top. Below are a few samples. I love stained Mahogany but a red tinit might be really interesting too. Make sure to post some picts when your done, or better yet, make a build thread and show us your whole process from start to finish!

Is that a water-based blend ?
From my work in custom remodeling/renovations, creating builtins, vanity's, countertops etc..etc... make sure that whatever you decide to use is compatible from base coat to top coat

In addition to StewMac, I suggest looking into the Minwax family of stains and colors, you should find the tints you need for much less than buying them from a guitar parts supplier.
In addition if you have a problem with the product then you can ask them and get a direct answer as to how to remedy any problem with their products...

I only posted the guitars as a look into the finish wether that matched the OP's ideas

The Crimson Red guitar you're talking about is a Deluxe Super Strat. It had "Super Fat-Super Strat" single-coil pickups and a Deluxe "Super Switching" system delivering 7 pickup combinations.

This model has been replaced by the Deluxe Player Stratocaster, which is the same guitar except it got three Fender Vintage-Noiseless pickups and a new switching system allowing up to 9 different tonal options to choose from.

The black Strat with the mirror pickguard looks much like an Iron Maiden Stratocaster in appearance with the only differences being a normal 2-point bridge, three DiMarzio stacked humbuckers and a rosewood fretboard.

Image

The white guitar is a JB Player Strat with a Kahler Spyder trem, a humbucker in the bridge and two hot single-coils in the neck/middle. It really needs a fresh set of strings.

One of the three knobs is missing.

The STUMAC products I had looked at are the nitro tints in a aerosol can. They have mahogany, tobacco brown, black, amber and cherry red, gloss, satin and sanding filler.

I was thinking of sanding and hitting the base with sanding filler then a coat of mahogany and then cherry red layers over the mahogany and then several layers of gloss over all of it.

The body I have is a relatively inexpensive GFS mahogany body I paid about $65.00 for it. I have a BWB HH prewired pickguard from GFS, with chrome covered humbuckers.

It's my first build from this level so I bough the cheapest stuff for experimenting but think it could come out real nice if I do it right. The body is actually quite nice and is identical to my mim and mia strats in form and dimensions.

For a neck I was looking at the STUMAC mighty mite necks for strats. $140.00 for a rosewood or maple strat replacement neck.

Thanks everyone for the insight and advice, most of what has been posted has matched or confirmed my thinking on this project so far.
