Where are you setting the pickups from the strings for the N3 Noiseless pups?

I currently have them about 8/64 on bass side and 6/64 on the treb side. Sounds pretty good.

Are you all setting them closer to the strings or lower away?

Just curious.

Jeff

Sounds "pretty good"?

Have you tried other height settings? What sounds good to someone else may sound terrible to you and vice versa.

Bill,
I'm by no means an expert on things Strat. I'm more of an acoustic bluegrass player. Been getting into the electric thing to play in our church band. I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron (assuming I pick the thing up from the right end, but that's a different story).

I guess what I'm looking for is what can one expect in general in the sound/tone department when raising or lowering (more of X when lower, more of Y when higher) so I'll know what to look for.

Right now, it has good balance across the strings without too much bass or too much mid / treb. I have the tone knobs around 6-7 and my amp set flat right now just so it's not getting colored too much.

Any tips on what to look for and what I should be listening for as I move things around.

I have the action set the way I like it and the intonation is set up to be in tune up and down the neck (that's one thing I really like on these electrics, just turn a screw where on the acoustics, it's sandpaper, files, trial and error and replacing bone saddles if gone too far.

Thanks in advance for any tips.
Jeff

Measure All The Original Height Settings Then Play Around With Them. You Can Always Go Back To The Original Ones. Every Amp Is Going To Sound Different. Find What Sounds Good To You and Then Ask Some Friends What They Think.

yep, I have a really good starting point. Spent most of my time getting the setup right (relief, saddle height, nut depth, intonation). Now to complete the setup with the "best" pickup height.

Having come from the past 20+ years playing exclusively acoustic, what should I be listening for if the pups get too close or are too far away?

I'm assuming when the pups are on, the magnetic field would impact the strings if the pups are too close. Is that just a dead sound or is there something unique.

Also, if too far away, I assume loss of volume, tone and probably muddy sound?

Am I on the right track?

Jeff

+1 for the Hot Rails

A friend of mine has them in his strat, as he is into the heavy humbucker sound. They are loud, and with the right amp it sounds like a Les Paul on steroids.

Yes, you are on the right track. But the bottom line is, only you will know when they sound "best". No one else can tell you that.
