My strings hit the headstock just after the nut where the neck ends and the headstock begins. When I change strings, I can see where the strings have worn grooves into the wood.

Is this normal?

If it isn't, what should I do about it? Raise the nut? Do some sanding?

if they are touching the wood normally, either replace the nut or you could sand down the wood a bit.

my strings have worn grooves in the wood, but i do a lot of behind the nut bends, and strats just weren't designed for those.

I would tend to agree with this statement.

The strings should be touching like that. Take it to a Tech.

A lot of vintage strats are like that.

I wouldn't worry about it.

The only thing I'd do is rub some dirt into the grooves.

It's not vintage. It's brand new.

If the strings are deeply set into the nut, the nut slots are too deep. This can deaden tone, and not let the string ring freely. Get a new bone nut cut by a good tech. If the string is not too deep in the nut, but the string height is low at the first fret, you can remove the nut(carefully) and shim it. Both should be done by an experienced tech, or you could get a repair book and try your hand at it.

Are you sure the strings are rubbing ? It looks like the work of an inexperienced tech. The nut slots are filed on an angle and sumtimes a tech will file into that area behind the nut. It can happen at the factory but more likley by who ever set the guitar up.

Agree, I would think that you need a new nut that groves might not be so deep.

Yep, got it! That's exactly what it looks like. I'm in doubt that strings are able to scrach these deep notches into the wood. Also, the nut looks adjusted correctly, so that the angle behind the nut shouldn't be big enough to enforce the strings to notch the wood.

Cheers!
