Hi,

The truss rod nut on my MIM standard has seen better days and is close to be stripped out. I want to install a new nut. I found the part online, but I have a question. Can you take the nut right out of the headstock as it is, or do you need to remove the black plastic insert that surrounds the truss-rod hole?

This may have been answered before, but I've been having problems with the search function.

thanks,
Kong

i know vintage style truss rod nuts you can, have you checked stewmac for the tool to bore out the wood so when you install the new truss rod nut.

if my answer was useless, at least it served as a bump

Hi Kong: we had a thread a couple of months ago where a guy was asking exactly this. I warned him that if he had a modern double-action trussrod (Fender call their version "bi-flex") the nut would be welded on and wouldn't come off.

However, he then was terribly proud to say that he took the black plastic liner out (he didn't say how) and the nut was indeed a removable one - so obviously it was a single-action trussrod. I think he thought he was proving me wrong and getting a happy thrill from it.

Actually, what was said then stands: it depends which type of rod you have in there, and we won't know that till you try. So go to; I know you have the skills. :)

Be most interested to hear anything you feel like passing on about getting that black liner out. And of course, photos of the whole operation would be much appreciated. As you know! :D

Good luck - C

I took it off this morning before work. I did not have to take out the plastic liner. I did have trouble getting it to come out because there was some sort of glue-like residue all over the nut. I had to add a bit of leverage to the allen wrench while I loosened the nut. It finally cleared the plastic liner enough to get a grip with a needle nose pliers. The same glue was also inside the nut end making adjustment difficult. I loosened the string tension before this operation and I'm waiting for a new nut to arrive.

Here is a pic of the nut covered in the glue-like crud. Would anyone have any idea what it is covered with and why?

Good job on getting the old nut out! The "crud" is indeed glue........and rust. The glue got on there when the truss rod was installed and the fretboard ( or the plastic plug ) was glued on. The new nut should fit much easier now! :D

Ahh the little things...

I got the new truss rod nut today and installed it in my Strat. The old one was so stripped out and crud-covered that I could barely take any relief out of the neck. I was lucky it did not completely strip and get stuck in there. The new one went right right on and now functions exactly as it should. Got the neck relief sorted out and now this thing plays like butter (and I thought it played nicely before!)

It's nice when such a small thing can make all the difference! I love when things work right. :D
