I'm playing an American Deluxe through a Blues Deluxe amp in the dirty channel, but it's still to clean without cranking up the drive and volume, and that's too loud - anyway to get a dirtier sound at lower volume?

Aside from adding an FX pedal into the mix.

Pickups closer to strings will give you more volume and distortion, but less sustain. Guitar volume on 10, crank up the OD, and lower the amp volume.

maybe you can switch out your tubes to some class A tubes, which get the tube distortion at lower volumes

You need an overdrive pedal. You'll never get a good sound from teh master channel.

Check this: http://www.fulltone.com/stpframe.html The OCD is the best I ever played with a Fender. But anyway, you definitely need a pedal, I had the same prob some years ago.

Cheers!

How about adding a distortion box.

There's really no such thing as Class A tubes. Class A refers to the way the power stage is biased. If his amp is Class B or Class A/B changing the tubes won't make it Class A.

I haven't used that particular amp, but you should be able to increase the drive and decrease the volume control to get some overdrive at a lower level. A pedal is usually easier to deal with if your not hung up on getting your amps overdrive sound.

Altough that is basically true, you can use different tubes to get less wattage from your amp, which inturn will give you more brakup at lower volumes. Like pullin 1 tube completly out af a super and then re biasing it
