Apologies if this is a dumb question, but I haven't been able to find an answer.

On several US strats I've run across there were short phillips head screws in the base of the pickup between the poles. Why are they there? What do they do to the sound of the pickup?

Here's pic

Thanks in advance!

They are there in the bridge pickups to alter the pickup's magnetic field, thus somewhat expanding these pickups midrange and lows.

Thanks for the reply, I figured it would affect the magnetic field, but couldn't possibly guess how. Will have to do some experimenting. . .
