I just got a American Stratocaster Deluxe and took the plastic off the pickguard. Bits of plastic are stuck under the knobs. Can I pull off the volume knob with the S1 switch in it just like the other knobs or will I damage something?

Thanks.

I had a 2004 Am Dlx Strat; it seems like the S1 knob just pulled off. However, I also remember all 3 parts (main knob, spring, and pushbutton) stayed together pretty well - it didn't pop apart or anything.

With stubborn knobs, I use two tea spoons, one under each side of the knob. Use them as levers to gently lift the knob off the pot.
The S1 comes off that way too.

Yes, removing the last remnants of those 'protective' covers can be a bugger.

I just finished cleaning up a Deluxe Strat with the S1 thingamajig knob. I eventually had to remove all the knobs to get rid of the sticky static loaded debris that wouldn't come away otherwise - as well as having to slacken off all the remaining pick guard screws and the pickup height adjustment screws. Surely there has to be a better way of protecting this damn pickguard protector .

Anyway, just take your time, use the correct screwdrivers, spoons or whatever other gadgets you may use, and take special care of that S1 switch knob. This particular knob is made up of a couple of plastic component parts that can - and will - easily fly apart when the knob finally comes off. Easy to lose the smaller bit. I don't recall any springs though.

Mine is a brand new guitar and the knobs were on there pretty tight. Finger nails (both hands) did the job, but it is not the easiest thing to accomplish. I figured however that there may be less damage done to the guitar than using tools (spoons etc.).

The guitar now looks good, and my fingernails will no doubt grow back.

Good luck!

Should be fine. I use a piece of ribbon - works miracles.

Nikki, could you snap a pick of this spoon technique???? I would like to see how ya do it. As for myself, I have a smaller, but thick hunting knife (ok, ok, I am redneck living in the back woods of Idaho!) and I slip the edge of the blade of this bone handled baby under the knob while wiggling it while turning the knob. At the same time I am lifting the knife gently and pushing the thicker part in toward the shaft of the pot. This always pops the knob off in a jiffy!

I tried this today when I had to pull the knobs to get the last bits of plastic off. Worked like a charm. Thanks for the tip. :)

Here you go.
Simply press down on the spoon handles and the spoon levers on it's round back, lifting the control knob.

Spoons?

Nah, After a couple of years of Kung Fu style three finger push-ups I grantee you'll have no props ripping your knob off. :D

That said I haven't trained properly in over a year so I've had to go back to using my teeth!

hey andy, that kungfu style you speak about is an old shaolin temple training excercise
using chopsticks to crack open wallnuts not predomiately found in china.

i resort back to caveman barbaric uses of my chest hair to remove knobs.
no offense to GEICO cavemen.

and no, i will not demonstrate a chest hair knob technique..

Thanks Nick! After I asked for the picts, I then visualized, kind of, what you were doing. Now I see! Guess I need to add 2 spoons to the tool collection. Already have some interesting things in there. I hate it when I go to tear down a guitar, someone used Super Glue on one of the knobs! Ugh! I have literally broke them off!

I Used Two Guitar Picks. It Worked Great. I Wouldn't Use A Spoon Incase It Slipped. You Can Also Use A Piece Of Rubber To Hold The Knob While You Lift It Off.
