I've been searching on the forums for this answer.

I have a '91 Am Stnd Strat with 2-pivot tremolo bridge. Can it be converted to a vintage 6-pivot tremolo bridge? Callham website has a conversion kit but mentions the the need to refret. Are there any other options out there?

I am interested in doing this for looks and tone without having to re-fret or buy a new neck.

Can anyone help me? If this is not possible, what is the best upgrade for the Am Stnd bridge? Or is the improvement insignificant and I should stick with what it came with?

Thanks.

Well what state are your frets in?

Seriously, I'd take it with a pinch of salt about Callahams claims on needing a refret. It's not that your guitar will need a refret as much as he claims the edge angle of the American Standards frets to be very exaggerated. Which having played a few I firmly don't believe it to be too far off the 30/60 degree standard angle.
Also the claim about string spacing seems off too, compared to older AM STD trems. he claims 52mm, I measured my string spacing on a AM STD bridge at 54mm. The vintage bridge is 56mm E-E string spacing.
I used a Wilkinson 5+1 trem to convert my Mexican Strat from 52mm to 56mm string spacing with no problems at all. Despite it having the original string spacing he claims American Standards to have.
Also bare in mind that saddle spacing really only affects the far upper frets, 17+ in a worst case scenario.
All in all, I'd avoid it, simply because he obviously has no faith in his product.

I have it on very good authority that all Fender guitars, from Squiers to CS are fretted by hand. I can't see why Fender would deviate on something so crucial for only one model. The American Deluxe isn't fretted any different to my Customshop, Mexican tele or strat, or vintage Hotrod.

You know Niki, that exactly what I thought when I viewed the post linking to Calahams two post to six screw conversion. I have many different Strat necks and I'm with your statements about neck width and frets.cheers
