I just recorded the classic Parker/Phillips song "Mystery Train" for my club band Slant Six's calling card CD. The guitar used was my white Road Worn 60's Strat with Lollars and a '79 Lead II neck with 6150 frets. I was gonna use the Tele, but then the Strat was getting exactly the tone needed for the song. It was my very first recorded country solo (chickin' pickin') and I was surprised it came together so quick. You can give a listen at:

http://www.reverbnation.com/play_now/song_6829431

Of course, I boned up on some YouTube videos of classic pickers in the genre before putting together the solo -- Albert Lee, Pete Anderson, Brad Paisley, Brent Mason, Roy Nichols etc.

Keep on pickin', cheers, Stephen Joseph

Wow, thanks man! In fact I did all the gtr parts and vox. All gtrs were done with the Strat. The rhythm has a little slap back echo for that rockabilly (Scotty Moore) thang. I was set on the Tele too until it came time to record. We plugged the Strat in first (close mic'd Vox AC15 Heritage and a MXR DynaComp + MXR Carbon Copy) and the sound on the second position (between bridge and middle) just sounded perfect right off, so we went with it.

Thank you much for checking it out, cheers, Stephen Joseph

Thanks a bunch for listening, Peter. Ever use a strat for country solos? I once saw Vince Gil play a strat for a solo in a country tune.

Oh ya, that's the one; I-IV-V in E. I find with this kinda stuff, it's all about the groove. So a real solid rhythm section is essential. I adore the stuff from the 50s for inspiration. Stuff seems so magical from that period, especially the cars, the guitars, the women (Marylin Munroe et al. - Whoa!).

Mmmmm, ya -- very choice ride. Though a different decade, the '68 Shelby 'Stang has always been prominent for me, but those 50's vettes are just as juicy. For a Fender guitar, I'd have to take either the 51 Nocaster (butterscotch/blackguard), the 64 Strat (burst), or the '69 Thinline (mahogany). Ah, dreams...

That's some nice pickin' man...being from the NashVegas area I've heard alot in my lifetime and although I can't play it like I would like to since I'm more into blues,it's related to what I do.
You might want to check out Luther Perkins if you haven't already,he was Johnny Cash's lead player until he died in '68 I think it was.I have a brother in law who really loved Luther's playing, and my BIL learned every lick I guess,he used a Strat but I think Luther might have used a Tele,I'm not sure.
You can see Luther on youtube with Johnny under Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Two.

Thanks so much you guys -- it really means something coming from one's peers! Honestly, Luther Perkins has been a major influence on my country playing. I too am primarily a blues-oriented player, but was brought up on classic Country and Bluegrass. It's inevitable influence, however, pops up in my playing often and sometimes surprises me when it takes me somewhere I've never been -- especially when your not thinking, but just feeling a groove etc. When we play "Folsome Prison Blues," I try to do the solo just like Luther, as you can't really improve on perfection ;-)

Re Luther -- yep, the stuff they were doing at Sun was the "The New $@!&" mang! The foundation licks for what would become Rock&Roll. And Luther was just as big a part as Scotty Moore et al. Ha, the other day we were rehearsing a new drummer for an upcoming gig (my cover band does lotsa 50s stuff), and we were doing the Johnny Burnette tune "Lonesome Train." Anyhow, the guy had never heard of Link Wray. I guess I expect too much sometime huh?
