Here is another build I did a while back. All the making os the David Gilmore but ain't. This is a MINT 1997 Gloss Vintage Red AMERICAN STRATOCASTER. The body is made from Alder, with a high gloss Vintage Red finish. This has EMG’s famous SA Pickup System. They are hot, yet quiet, which is especially important when you're working in a studio, and running a lot of effects or through a big rack. They combine the best features of the early Strat sounds, with added midrange response and higher output. Their “bell-like” ringing harmonics and increased sustain give the SAs greater versatility than normally found in single-coil pickups. They use ALNICO (aluminum-nickel-cobalt) magnets, which help deliver classic overdrive, with smooth midrange distortion, while still retaining the familiar high end of a single-coil.

The EMG electronics are similar to a David Gilmour Strat, but with an extra push/pull tone control. The onboard EQ circuits give you very powerful tone shaping abilities. If you look at the pictures, your will see 4 knobs rather than your standard 3. The lower tone knob controls the EXG - Guitar Expander which attenuates the midrange frequencies while simultaneously boosting the low and high frequency response. The increased low frequency response comes through clean and percussive. The accentuated high frequency response results in improved sensitivity with a well-defined attack. The reduced midrange improves overall clarity throughout the boosted bandwidths to give you a bigger sound. This “scooped” tone helps emphasize the clean, transparent classic Strat tone. The middle center knob (small black one) controls the SPC - Presence Control, or more commonly know as the The Fat Control. EMG invented the SPC to emulate a humbucking tone in the EMG and SA Systems. It is an active midrange boost circuit mounted on a potentiometer that gives up to 6 dB gain in the 1.3 kHz region while reducing high frequency response to accentuate the mids. It comes alive with overdrive tones. The extra middle center knob (other small black one, off to the side) is a tone push/pull pot which cuts the midrange of the neck and bridge pickups and adjusts them as a standard tone control, thus giving you even more tonal control and variation. As soon as I plugged this in, I could tell there was more power than with any other Strat set-up I have owned. The EMG circuits give you almost an unlimited variation of tones; from a fat and full humbucker, to a standard single coil Strat tone. Add to that: hollow, thick, thin, and even clean high fidelity sounds.

Image The EMG set-up in this guitar has an interesting history behind it. Sometime back I bought a Strat Plus from Billy Sullivan who has been playing for years (and still does) with Gary Lewis and the Playboys also backs up artists such as Mitch Ryder, Mark Lindsay, Billy J. Kramer, Lou Christie, Brian Hyland, Chris Montez, Freddie Cannon, and many other artists on the Oldies Circuit. In 1996, he bought a new Fender Strat Plus, which he had a lutheir professionally install this custom EMG setup for his stage work. I bought the guitar just to get this custom installed system EMG pick-up assembly.

A good thing with the EMGs is that you no longer need to solder the wires. The "quick connect" makes their installation a breeze.

The EXG and SPC circuits are very similar to our own TBX and MDX schemes, which were developed by James Demeter & John Carruthers in the early 1980s.

Yup, that red layer sets things off quite nicely!
You have a great eye for these things!

I have to start reading up on the Lace pups...

Here is another build I did a few months ago. A friend of mine from Czech Republic asked me to build his ultimate dream Strat. After playing with me for around 2 years, he fell in live with the Strat Plus guitars, so his pick was? This was it! A solid Ash body with Maple neck, but using using 2 Dually Laces pickup and wired like a double Ultra. Also he wanted a wood pickguard and back plate. We used custom cut Maple for that! He wanted black on Maple all the way down even with the dots on the neck!

Image Image Image Image

We ended up using a 1995 Strat Plus body that had aged to a nice creamy color and I had a really nice 1995 solid Maple neck. The pickups used were—neck: Blue/Gold Laces, middle: Silver Lace, and bridge Red/Red Laces. Each Dually has a 3-way mini switch. Really nice because in the neck you can get a fat type humbucker sound, or a bit leaner P-90, or even a 50's Strat with that nice 50's chime. All the way down you can mix and match pickups. He loves the guitar and it is used in his playing in 3 or 4 different bands around Czech.

The "double Ultra" wiring you're talking about is an HSH pickup configuration with coil-splits.

You'll get a "triple Ultra" if you make an HHH layout with three duallies and a trio of mini-toggles for coil-splitting!

Now that's something I would love to see/hear!! :)

Do you have any demo clips of an emerald lace Xhefri?

Are you a big fan of HHH Strats, Blertles? :?: Fender has never produced an HHH Strat as a general production item except for a limited-edition batch of FSRs.

I have seen a few Strats with 3 P-90 pickups. A guy I know plays one. Kind of cool looking with a black body and the cream covers on the pickups.

I like this all-black rosewood-neck hard-tail Strat with the matching P-90 pickups. 8)

Ill send you a message soon- Just thinking though, I bet lace get a bit of interest from your site with people becoming interested in lace pickups after reading info about the plus/deluxe/ultra- I know it's your hobby and interest, but have you ever thought to ask Lace about a little bit of advertising on your site? To be fair mate- as far as the site goes, Google 'Strat Plus' and your site is second on the list next to Wiki, which incidentally takes a lot of reference from your site anyways. I reckon if they did a little advertising, they would get more traffic on their own website which would only benefit in sales.. Maybe it wouldnt hurt to ask, you don't really have to benefit from it if you don't want to. But I wouldnt mind betting that your site would get more hits than theirs :)
