I'm getting ready to move up from 10s to D'Addario 11s-49 Blues/Jazz Rock strings and I want to find a tech who's particularly good with setting up the neck (dressing / leveling the frets, adjust / replace the nut, neck bow, etc.). My MIM Deluxe Player's Strat plays pretty well now, but the strings at the neck over the body do not ring like they should (partially muted at times but not buzzing).

To any Houston locals reading this, I live close to Fuller Vintage Guitar Shop, and without a recommendation, they'd probably be my first choice, but they're not on the list of authorized service centers.

I've visited Danny D's Guitar Hacienda in League City, and they seem to be pretty up on service and are listed here as Fender certified for service, but dang, they're NOT close.

Please give me your recommendations, guys and gals.

Thanks!

John

They have a great tech, Robert, at the Texas Guitar Company out in Katy. It's kind of far, but way closer than League City. Just a drive down IH-10, and I believe they're also Fender certified. I take my guitar to him all the time.

There's also Ron Pace, who repairs guitars out of his house on Westheimer. He's great, he's even set up guitars for Billy Gibbons. He leveled the frets on my T-60 and did a great set up on it, but it took about two months. Robert usually takes a week or even less sometimes.

I've been to Fuller's, but I can't vouch for their repair work. I've never had anything done there. I love going there though, they have a great selection of guitars.

Thanks for your feedback! That's very helpful.

I go to Katy all the time, so I'll stop in and visit Robert with the guitar and see what he has to say. Whatever I end up doing, I'll post back here and let you know my experience.

There is Dr. Guitar at Texas Music Emporium off FM 1960 and I-45 (Accross 45 from Guitar Center). They are also a certified Fender Repair shop.

I found Neal Sargent (off Washington) via a Google search. The reviews on him are outstanding, and I found out why. Many repairs he will do while you wait and he's ridiculously cheap for such repairs. I've never been charged over $25 by Neal, but gladly given him more.

He adjusted my neck and leveled my frets while I waited. Now all those frets over the body ring and sustain like they should. Nothing more frustrating than hitting a note that's deadened or muffled by uneven frets. He made my Strat play better than new!

Since then, I've taken friends Les Paul's to him, and sent others to him. A bass player buddy was ready to buy new pickups for his Fender Jazz bass. Neal took it apart and found the supporting foam under the pickups was all rotted away. He put in some new foam, which pushed those pickups way up and solved my friend's problem for $20 vs. what he would have paid for new pickups and still had the same problem.

Thanks for the responses, guys! I'll keep those other guys in mind for friends that live West I-10 and North I-45.
