Theres a lot of useful comments, its is a simple if not the most simple adjustment to make but taking the plunge an pulling tools out on a guitar that you have just spent a lot of your hard earn cash on knowing full well that you don't no what your doing .... yeah id of taken it to somebody so good move.
The only thing that could possibly go wrong with that adjustment is if you were to try to tighten the screws up to as far as they could go an possibly run the risk of splitting the body, its a long shot but have seen it happen !!!
How you have the bridge set is just as much down to personal taste just the same as the gage of strings you use.
I personally have the bridge flush to the body with 5x springs an 11 gage strings, the next person will have the total opposite, its all good.

They didn't explain it to you at the shop?!

It's literally the easiest adjustment you can make on a guitar, I wouldn't even call it a repair. If you paid more than $5 for that then you got screwed.

A bit harsh, don't you think? He took it in for a set up, which he should have done anyways. Yeah, turning two screws would have fixed his problem, but if its a new guitar, a set up is generally recommended. Also, depending on the place, people wont even see the tech who sets their guitar up, let alone have one explain anything. They're usually so backed up at the places here that it's a 3 day turn around for a $80 set up.

I don't think he said he took it in for a full set up, if he did I must have missed it.

Maybe it's harsh to say I'm shocked, disappointed is the right word. If someone comes in with that problem and you work at a guitar store, can't you take three minutes of your time to say, "Your heavier gauge strings are causing the problem because they pull up with more strength than your lighter ones. You just tighten those screws in the back there."
And anyone working at a guitar store, tech or not, should know about how to fix something like that. It's a very common thing.

I'm not saying what the poster did was wrong, he was right to ask questions and right to take it into the shop since he was unsure. Everyone with a Strat experiences that when they change string gauges. I used to try to fix mine myself and I always ended up making it worse, I've only recently started to know what I'm doing when it comes to set ups. I even brought my Les Paul into the shop the first time I changed the strings because I thought I broke the bridge. Turns out they're supposed to come off like that.
I guess I'm just surprised at the lack of attention they seem to have given him in the shop. Nothing the OP did was wrong.

I suppose id depends on ware you have taken it, if you've taken it to your local branch of GC then i can understand them not wanting you to meet the guitar tech, just cause they work there on a does not make them a guitar tech!!
Every time Ive ever been in there an tried to ask a few questions I'm either answered by "I don't Know" or " Ill just got an get somebody for you".
Its just a matter of finding a decent local Luthier with a small shop, who takes pride in what there doing an enjoys there job as much as you enjoy playing guitar !!
