I'd like to block the tremolo on my Strat as I rarely use the whammy and have read it can increase the sustain. However, I'd like it to look professional and use the right type of material for the best sound.

I think Fender recommends 1/8" from top of guitar body to bottom of tremolo, so a 1/8" shim would seem like a good place to start or am I off base here?

Anyhow, is anyone aware of an aftermarket part I can buy or would I have to make something myself?

I would also appreciate any advise from those of you who may have already done this with your guitars.

Thanks so much.

I've heard of people using 9 volt batteries. I keep my bridge down to about 1/16" from the body and use 5 trem springs. I'm very happy with my sustain.

Don't think I want to put a battery on my new Strat.

I've only have the three springs the guitar came with, but I do have trem set level with the body and ~ 1/16". I even thought about putting it flat with the body, but I don't have enough adjustment left on some of the saddles to raise the strings to a point where they don't buzz. This is why I was considering blocking.

I'm already getting excellent sound and might find I don't care for a blocked tremelo, but it's just something I'd like to try.

You could try a flat, rectangular piece of maple 7/16" thick by 1-1/2" high by 2-5/8"wide. level out any paint bumps along the tremelo cavity wall before pressing the block in for good. Use 5 springs for a nice springy reverb chamber, and great transfer from the sustain block to the body. You could also taper it slightly to change the attitude of the tremelo base plate to the body.

And, oh yeah, the block for the tremelo goes between the sustain block and the rear wall of the trem cavity
