What do you mean "dead string" ?

For fret buzz, check:
1- Neck curve, this can move and if too staight action could be too low
2- Worn frets, not all frets just some : need fret crowning and polish
3- Action too low; adjust saddles height.
4- If it buzz with open strings check nut string guide: too low.

If you have to see a guitar tech best to see an independant luthier, a real one. Be carefull on the guy at music stores if you have not experience with is work before.

Fret buzz can come from a combination of all of the factors mentioned by stratele52. You can set your guitar up yourself, on this website there is information you can use to take measurements and set your axe up to factory specs. Your guitar is old. And if it is anything like my 1974 strat, your frets are really worn. If you use the guitar as your main, daily-player, then have it checked and set up by a tech. You may need a refret, but it would be well worth it if that's the case.

Pictures?

Some shots of the fretboard would be helpful here.

Start with a fresh set of strings by another maker than your regular strings. Then do a complete setup from start to finish.

Then let us know if you still have those issues.
