Hey all!

I'm starting a custom Strat style build. I was wondering where exactly to install the trem claw. I'm guessing exactly center horizontally in the rear rout, but how high/low do I put it? Are there any kinds of rules as to the installation of the claw?

Thanks!!!!!!!!!

Hi TurnMeTo11,

Here is a picture of a trem claw installed. The two screws that hold it into the body are screwed in until the desired spring tension is achieved. The screws can be loosened for less tension on the springs, or tightened for more spring tension. See the Strat setup guide here for more info, third paragraph under "Tremolo".

Thanks shimmilou. That answers a big part of my question :)

The other thing I'm on sure about is whether of not the bottom of the claw rests on the wood of the guitar or if it is suspended. Take a look at my cheesy diagram here. lol.

Is the top or bottom one correct?

Very nice diagram. Yes, suspended is the right way. A little above the body, just high enough off the body to make the springs about level as your diagram shows, but not too high as to allow the springs to hit the cover plate. The two screws will go into the body at a slight angle, for ease of access by screwdriver for adjustment. You must post pics of your guitar when finished, or even start a build thread with pics of your progress. :)

Absolutely!

It's in the forum rulebook somewhere.

And some pictures as you build it, we love to watch the build as it goes on.

BTW, the bottom one is closer to correct, but you don't want it touching the body.
You want it to be deep enough to clear the cover plate.

TurnMeTo11,

You have a nice project but it seem that you never see a Strat before if you asking about tremolo claw.

I suggest you borrow or rent a Stat to mesure and see what everything looks.

Alright so the claw should be pretty low, but not touching the wood and definitely clearing the cover plate.

I can definitely start a build thread! Would I create in the Stratocaster forum? The guitar has no actual Fender parts. ha.

I think that "Strat Style" qualifies nicely. :D
