I heard this today whlie over at my local Guitar superstore.
Seems Leo Fender gave(or sold) to Eldon Shamblin of Texas
Playboy fame, the first stratocaster, which is pretty neat. Well
if ever there was an appropriate canidate for an artist series
edition this guy is thee man. I'd like to know more about this
guitar, pics I've seen of it indicate the back side is somwhat
unusual, maybe?. Any one with insight or opinion come on in.
Many thanks.

It wasn't the first strat that Eldon was given, it was one of the prototypes for the '54 strat. It was gold.

Strat #0001 is owned by David Gilmour, and that isn't even the first strat. There were weird serial numbers back then and there were several production strats made before serial number 1.

Hello cryingstrat,
Gold, pretty neat, I've never seen a color phot of it. Do you know where
it is these days? From what I can make out it seems thicker and the
perimiter of the back looks a bit larger, maybe it's a protection cover of sorts. Any thoughts. Thanks again.

I tried, but I couldn't find a pic of it.

Here is a neat link with an early Stratocaster prototype -- maybe the body of the FIRST strat!

http://soundlogic-usa.com/electron/FDP/fdp229a.html

It was played by Bill Carson and eventually ended up in the family of the current owner. It "resurfaced" recently. The original neck is gone, but the story is interesting. Check out the skinny trem spring cavity.
