A Strat is what is is. What it is not is an archtop.

Want a fender archtop? Buy a Gretsch or a Jag/Jazzmaster.

If it had an archtop, it wouldn't be a Strat. However Fender could make an archtop and call it a "Fender Archtop" or something to that effect. Interesting suggestion.

The closest to your Q. would have to be the Showmaster FMT, Carved figured maple top, in either solid or transparent finishes, bound edges.
It was featured in the 2002 frontline catalog. I don't think they are available anymore.

I'm sure the Fender CS would still do a Showmaster or anything else you want (for a price), and of course there are other folks (specifically a gentleman who designed the Showmaster during his tenure at Fender, built something like it for a fellow named Knopler before he joined Fender, and now has his own company) who make very fine carved top Strat-style guitars, some of them are even semi-hollow.

If a strat were archtop, it would not be a strat. But I know what you're saying. The Strat has been around for so long, and has built up a huge, loyal fanbase. Some are so anal as to be put off if anything has been changed from the traditional formula. I am kind of the same way. If I want a guitar with humbuckers and a Floyd Rose I will buy an Ibanez or Jackson, lol. I would be okay with an archtop strat-style guitar, just don't call it a stratocaster! I guess it just depends on how good it looked and how good it sounded though. The last thing the guitar world needs is another abomination, like the Jag-Stang !

Lets say that this logic is right.
I'm just wondering, if an archtop strat IS NOT a Strat then what about HSS or HSH or HH Strats or 12-string strats or hardtailed or with an FR tremolo and locking nut. They are not Strats neither?
I 'm sure that when the first HSS strat came out there, there were people saying "This thing is not a Strat".

But what defines a Strat then?
If it's the philosophy behind the sound then an HSS Strat is not a strat. But then, any guitar with SSS PUs is potentially a Strat. So, this isn't a solid logic.

Is it the shape then? Is it the solid body? Is the neck radius etc?
I would like to know what makes a strat, STRAT.

Very nice! I know it's one of many, but a guitar like that must hold a special place in your collection.

Interesting question, Alex.

For my money, a Strat is any Strat-shaped guitar made by Fender irrespective of 'F' holes, arch tops, 12 strings... Even the acoustic guitar version is still a 'Strat'.

Shape and marque, I reckon!

I think specific model designation is important but I also think that's the case even if the guitar in question wins the approval of its Stratiness from even the most pedantic of Strat aficionados!
