I've been having trouble with my strings lately. I've lost two B strings in a week, both broken at the saddle. I wasn't using the tremolo, I was just playing a song. I also lost an E string in an unrelated incident. I just pulled it clean off while I was stretching it. I switched from 11s on my Strat to 10-52s about six months ago. I had it set up for the 10-52s though, so that can't be the problem.

Anyone have any idea what's up with the B strings though? Two in a week broken in the same place seems very strange to me, especially since I've probably only broken four or five strings ever before.

Agree, could be a rough spot... I've had it happen on both, saddles and tuners.

Thanks for that pic Nevin, never seen that before!

I once had the same problem. Seemed that I kept breaking the same strings as you. I always seemed to replace about two strings, every time I jammed with anyone for a couple of hours or so.

I started out putting a very light coat of oil on the bridges, where the string touches.......still broke strings. Then I got somefine emery cloth and tried to smooth out the bridges........still broke strings.

My solution: I was using Fender Bullet Strings at the time. I decided to switch brands (D'Addario).......I've never broken a string since. So......for me........it was just a matter of switching brands.

Well, I've used D'Addario 95% of the time since I started playing guitar so that can't be it.

I'll try that thing with the wire sheaths, and when my tech gets back in town I'll ask him to check my saddles for any rough spots. If all else fails I'll start using Ernie Ball Beefy Slinkys. 8)

I would be checking your neck relief or in total a fresh set up.

Is this your guitar : Squier Affinity Strat w/ Texas Specials ?

Shure the problem is your saddles unless you keep your stings too many hours in your guit before replace them for a new set.

Squier is low cost Fender so the saddles are.

I never never break a string ( or two times in many years) on my Americans Strats or Tele

No, I'm crazy when it comes to changing strings. Two weeks is the maximum time I can go before changing them, I hate it when they start rusting out.

I'm Squier could have something to do with it. I've taken care of the electronics, I've taken care of the frets, but I've never been able to replace the bridge and block like I've wanted to. They don't make upgrades for Squier Affinity series guitars like they do for Squier or MIM Standards.

Just get a cardboard nail file or emery board and smooth your saddles string grooves over with that. Go light on it, minimum pressure quick movement. The burr doesn't have to be massive to cause untold problems on the saddle.
You'll get years and years out of Squier saddles that way, I got about eleven years out of mine.

Or.......you could get Graph Tech String Saver Saddles.
I have 11 guitars that have had ALL saddles replaced with these.
I play pretty hard and bend a lot.......I've had terrific luck with these!

Maybe it's not your saddle's problem but you have a faulty tuner, making you tune 1 octave higher

Just Kidding...

I wouldn't sand the saddles because the chrome coating is a bit sensitive.
Maybe you could exchange the saddles of A and B strings. I have a Floyd Rose trem, but, correct me if I'm wrong, I suppose the height of the saddles is symmetrical X-Y-Z-Z-Y-X. If it's a saddle problem it wouldn't affect the thick A string and it may solve your problem.
If that doesn't work, try different brands of strings.
