I just answered a similar post, but my response is applicable here too. I changed the block in my '08 Am Std. I didn't like the stock cast copper-infused block, and changed to a steel Callaham. I liked the tone better, the new block added a nice improvement in tone and sustain. To me, the stock block just made the tone too bright/thin. With the new block, the sound is so much better that I am no longer considering changing pickups as I had when I first got the guitar. I want to add a base plate to the bridge pickup also.

I think that the single best improvement that you can make to the newer Am Std Strat would be to change the bridge block to something much better than the stock cast block.
