Hello everyone,
I've just bought an American Standard Series 2010 (2 weeks ago), and I would like some answers, if possible, to two important questions.
- The first is what are the original (manufacture) string gauge mounted on the American Standard?
- My second question is: by changing the gauge (0.09-0.42) to a (0.10-0.46), is that requires new adjustments to be made on the guitar?
If yes, what settings and how to do?
I'd like to pull up a higher gauges, and place (0.10-0.46), because I'm more in the register of the blues and I love the warm tones, at the expense of playability (thicker mean, harder for the fingers). But I would like to avoid that the guitar neck from warping, or any other de-tuning or de-tuning of the guitar.
Please help me by answering my questions.

Best wishes to all for 2011

Hi camelman,

I changed strings on my '08 Am Std from 9s to 10s, and I only had to adjust the truss rod a little, but I have my bridge decked, so I didn't have to worry with any other adjustments. I believe that your Strat came with 9s. If you are only changing from 9s to 10s, you may not need any adjustments other than to tighten the two trem claw screws a little to compensate for the extra pull of the larger strings and lower the back of the bridge down to where it was. If your action is higher with the new strings after tightening the trem claw screws, you can tighten the truss rod adjust a little to straighten the neck, lowering the action back down. Also recheck your intonation, it might need to be reset. Check out the setup guide here for more info. :)

Thanks a lot shimmilou for the clear explanation.
According to the product description on: http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0110400705 they say the original STD strings gauges from 2010 series are "Fender® USA Super Bullets® 3250L, NPS, (.009-.046 Gauges)".
It seem to me the strings on my guitar (brand new bought 2 weeks ago) are (.009-.042).
Amazing ?!?!

I think that in this case, the site may have the wrong numbers for the low E, and you are correct. I have a new set of 3250L Super Bullets that I'm looking at right now, and they are .009 to .0042. The 10s that I used are .010 to .046. I hadn't noticed that before you mentioned it, good eye! :)

Thanks for the question and the replies from shimmilou - I finally got the nerve to try my own adjustment. My 2008 Am. Deluxe Strat had been set up by a good luthier this summer but I've found that the action was very high this winter (Not so on my Tele though - I think the thicker neck has resisted change better). I was contemplating bringing it back to the shop but I'd be without the guitar for at least 2 weeks. Since there were no other changes to the guitar (strings, etc.) I thought I would try adjusting the truss rod to eliminate some of the bow. A few adjustments later the action is much better and the guitar is more playable. I'll play it a good bit over the next few days to be sure the setup doesn't change too much.
