Everybody has something different that work for them depending on the rest of your equipment and what you like but A good place to start is a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and a Seymour Duncan Jazz in the neck. those two pick-ups are Seymour Duncan himself's favorite combination. The Jazz has more highs than the 59 neck. There are so many great pick-ups out there. Check opinions on harmony cdntral and You Tube. If you want a great thick sound get Bare Knuckle Nail Bombs but they are over $ 200 each but you never have to buy another pick up.

that is an interesting combo! all i know now is that the standard ones that came with it are not that pleasing to "my" ears, though they are still getting tone trained so to speak.

the nail bombs will have to wait due to cost, but the others i'll certainly check into.

question: would i need to change the pots or should they be ok?

thank you for the help

I agree the 59 is a great choice for the neck, but I think the Pearly gate in the bridge is a better choice.

It's all personal choice.

I also like to use the old style "Paper and oil" caps over the newer ceramic ones.

It's all personal taste and what works for you with your equipment. I bought a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates pick up and I didn't like it. I like Seymour Duncan prefer the Jazz modle over the 59 because the Jazz has better clarity and definition. The pots that are in your guitar now are 500k pots and that is the best to use with humbucker pick ups so you don't need to change your pots. If you want to get fancy you could have a tech sometime put on/on/on mini switches for the pick ups to get three different sounds out of each pick up. Not all people need that. Most are happy with just running the pick ups in humbucking mode. Try to hear as many pick ups as you can.

regarding the pearly gates, them being 4 conductor, that wouldn't be an issue with wiring in my particular strat would it?

good advice and i'm gonna do this. the info you folks give helps me walk into a store with more education. i'm definitely going to get a pair of duncan's though. they got to sound better than these standards IMHO

Actually, they can be found in a set called HOTRODDED by Duncan. They are available all over the net for about $130 dollars.

seymour came up with a new design, solderless pickup changing. no need for solder.
the pickups plug in. this could be a start to a new way to do guitar wiring.

i'll click over to their site and see if the jazz/JB models are with that new design. i don't mind the soldering though as long as i can follow good schematics.

thanks for the info!

if you want some serious tone, put a vintage Guild HB-1 humbucker in the neck.
