Hey guys-

I have an 04 mim standard strat that i absolutely love. It was my first strat and first Fender and instilled a love for me in Fenders aver anything else. Now i own nothing but. I think i need a refret job or at least a crown and polish becasuse on most of the frets theres a flat spot from where i have absolutely played this guitar to death. My question is how mush should it cost approximately to crown/ polish or refret if i should so choose? This is not something i feel comfortable doing so i dont want to get reamed on this deal.

thanks.- Bos

"Around these here parts", for a Strat, a G&P is around $100 and new frets are around $250.

Refretting can be cost effective if you have the proper tools. Also, learning can be done via the information on the internet and some practice on a expendable neck. Plus, the skill will save you a ton of $ in a life time especialy if you have a guitar thats a keeper and the tools to do the job. Main thing in refretting is patience. Do a little at a time and avoid doing the whole neck in one day (less stress and more attention to detail = quality job).

If your frets are real low a crowning/polishing will not last as long as a refret.

Your frets are good chance to be OK only with crowning and polishing. Most frets can accept many of these works before replacement.
I pay less than $60 for this, Go to see a GOOD luthier and talk with before.

You should not need a refret on a 2004 guitar yet, unless you WANTED different size fret wire. Frets last many many years, and usually you can have the frets leveled and crowned several times before they get so low that you might need a refret. My '74 strat is still going with it's original frets, although mine are just now beginning to get almost too low to recrown. However, if you let this slide, you may end up wearing the flats spots into grooves in the fret, and if these get too deep, it will drastically shorten the amount of times you can have the frets leveled and crowned. But this would still have to be quite an extreme amount of wear, and I doubt you've worn the 'ol girl out just yet

+1.

I've put some fairly heavy use into my MIJ Strat over the past 20 years and it's not anywhere close to needing a refret.
