I have been pondering a new build and I am looking for some input on floating std trem vs Floyd Rose style.

I have never been a dive bombing EVH style maniac, but I would like to add a trem that will stay in tune. I know not everyone here uses a trem, usually I don't so I don't have much experience with them. I have heard that Floyd Rose style bridges "suck" tone out.

So the big question for debate is should I go with a std style trem which I would prefer with locking tuners...or should I suck it up and go for the Floyd for greater tuning stability? How does the std style stack up if you go for locking tuners over the std type?

Once set up and stabilized either will work fine, the Floyd is far more work to deal with, and since your not a dive bomber, you really don't need it.

I would get a good brass blocked 6 screw vintage tremolo as they are IMHO the most stable one and less prone to wear.
Set it up with 5 spring and set the tension so that the tremolo is flat on the body, this transfers more resonance to the body. The tension should be enough so the low "E" stays in tune as you bend either the high "E" or the "B" string one full step.
This way it will stay close to in tune if you break a string in the middle of a song.

I use this set up as I bend a lot and if you set it to float, when you bend, the other 5 go flat.
And if you break a string, you will be hopelessly out of tune and unable to finish a song.

I hope this helps.

+1 Jeffytune,

I have my Strats setup the same way, decked bridge. I originally decked the bridges on my Strats after I got my first Tele and was able to finally get a good sound when double-stop bending. After decking the bridges on the Strats, I also noticed the better sound as an added bonus, on top of the tuning stability. And, I believe that for a Strat, the decked trem bridge will give better tone than a hard-tail.

I also have one Kramer with the Floyd, and you are right, PITA to setup, but stays in tune very well with heavy whammy use. :)
